Switzerland beats Algeria 2-0 to reach World Cup last 16
Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoi secured Switzerland's passage to the knockout stage at BC Place in Vancouver.
Early breakthrough
Switzerland took the lead in the 10th minute (11th according to one report) when Manzambi's run down the left set up Breel Embolo for a close-range finish. Algeria struggled to create chances, with only a long-range effort from Aouar and a shot by Saïbi testing goalkeeper Kobel.
Second-half clincher
Just seconds after the restart, a defensive error by Belghali allowed Dan Ndoi to fire home a right-footed shot from inside the box, doubling the lead. Switzerland controlled the remainder, with Rieder missing a chance for a third in the 81st minute.
What's next
Switzerland, coached by Murat Yakin, reached the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive World Cup and ninth overall. They will face the winner of Colombia vs Ghana (or Argentina vs Cape Verde, per one report) on Tuesday, July 7.
