Gao secures first-round victory over Udvardy
Chinese wildcard Xinyu Gao advanced to the second round of the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing after defeating Hungary's Panna Udvardy on Thursday, 1 October. The 28-year-old Gao, currently ranked 244th in the WTA rankings, entered the main draw via a tournament wildcard and defeated the 79th-ranked Hungarian in straight sets, 6:2, 6:3. The match lasted 1 hour and 17 minutes on the hard courts in the Chinese capital. Gao dominated the opening set in 27 minutes before navigating a tighter second set, where she secured the decisive service break in the eighth game. Swiatek's tournament path and WTA Finals qualification
Gao's opening victory sets up a second-round match on Saturday, 3 October, against Poland's Iga Swiatek. Swiatek is seeded eighth in Beijing and occupies the ninth spot in the WTA world rankings. The Polish player won the China Open title in 2023 and enters this year's edition as a six-time Grand Slam champion coached by Francisco Roig. The tournament carries substantial significance for her season-ending qualification goals. Swiatek currently trails Czech player Karolina Muchova by more than 800 points in the race to secure a qualifying position for the WTA Finals.
If Swiatek advances past Gao on Saturday, she will face either 30th seed Donna Vekic or China's Lin Zhu in the third round. Potential fourth-round opponents in her section of the draw include Iva Jovic and Leylah Fernandez. A quarterfinal appearance could see Swiatek match up against Jelena Ostapenko or Coco Gauff.
Performance of the Polish delegation in Beijing
Swiatek is one of five Polish players who earned spots in the China Open singles main draw, and she is the final representative from the country to begin competition. Two Polish players exited during the opening round, as both Katarzyna Kawa and Magda Linette lost their opening matches on Thursday. Two other Polish competitors will contest their second-round fixtures on Friday, 2 October, prior to Swiatek's opener.
- Gao eliminates Udvardy in first round as Linette and Kawa exit
- Chwalinska plays Yastremska and Frech meets Bartunkova
- Swiatek opens her campaign against Gao in the second round
- Singles final concludes the China Open tournament
Maja Chwalinska, seeded 17th following her run as a 2026 French Open finalist, will play Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine at approximately 07:00 Polish time. Magdalena Frech is scheduled to play Czech 26th seed Nikola Bartunkova later in the day, around noon Polish time.
