Egyptian man remanded for murder of criminal lawyer Stavros Georgiou in Athens
The 28-year-old Egyptian confessed to beating 73-year-old Stavros Georgiou to death in his Athens office on 20 July, then selling his laptop for €50. He was also remanded for a pending case of indecent assault on a minor and drug offences.
The crime and confession
On the evening of Monday 20 July, 73-year-old criminal lawyer Stavros Georgiou was beaten to death in his office on 3rd September Street in Athens. The suspect, a 28-year-old Egyptian man, later confessed to police that he had been drinking with the victim before a heated argument broke out. He admitted striking Georgiou repeatedly in the head and against furniture, causing fatal craniocerebral injuries. The victim's relatives had been searching for him throughout the day; late on Tuesday night, his two 16-year-old daughters went to the building and rang doorbells, and the concierge let them in, leading to the discovery of the body.
I didn't want to hurt him, I just wanted to leave the apartment, we argued, everything happened very quickly, I hit him in various parts of the room. I left him unconscious, took the laptop and left.
The suspect claimed he had no intention to kill, only to flee. After the attack, he took the lawyer's laptop and sold it for €50 in the Omonia area before going to a hospital. He insisted he did not take the victim's wallet or phone.
Court appearance and detention
On Monday 27 July, the suspect was brought before the 5th regular investigating magistrate at the former Evelpidon school courthouse shortly before 11:00. He faced charges of intentional homicide in a calm state of mind, theft (later converted to robbery by the prosecution), and illegal stay in the country. After his testimony, the magistrate and prosecutor ordered his pre-trial detention.

The victim's brother had already filed a statement in support of the charges on Friday 24 July, the same day the arrest warrant for the separate case was executed.
Separate child abuse case
Alongside the murder charges, the suspect was also remanded for a pending case of indecent assault against a minor and violations of drug laws. An arrest warrant for that case had been issued on 28 May 2026 and was executed after his arrest for the murder. He gave explanations for both cases during the same court session.
Investigation details
Police conducted a supplementary search of the office and found the victim's wallet and mobile phone in a special compartment, confirming the suspect's claim that he had taken only the laptop. The suspect's defense lawyer, Christos Psarras, stated that the theft charge had been upgraded to robbery, a felony. The suspect remains in custody pending trial.
