Romania under yellow-code warnings for storms, hail and 100 km/h winds on 27-28 July

Three overlapping yellow-code warnings

On Monday 27 July, Romania's National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued three yellow-code warnings for atmospheric instability, heavy rain, hail, and strong winds, covering large parts of the country from midday Monday through Tuesday evening. The first alert runs from 12:00 to 23:00 on Monday, the second from 23:00 Monday to 10:00 Tuesday, and the third from 10:00 to 20:00 on Tuesday. Together they span 32 hours and affect regions from the western border to eastern Moldova and the Carpathian arc. ANM noted that isolated instability may also appear in other parts of the country outside the main warning zones.

Monday afternoon: storms, hail and torrential rain

The first warning, in effect from 12:00 to 23:00 on 27 July, targets Maramureș, Crișana, Banat, Transilvania, most of the mountain area, the western half of Oltenia, and northwest Moldova. Wind gusts of 50–70 km/h are expected, with isolated bursts over 80 km/h. Torrential downpours, lightning, and hail of small to medium size (1–3 cm) are forecast. In intervals as short as one to three hours, or through accumulation, water quantities will reach 15–25 litres per square metre, and locally exceed 30–40 l/m².

Overnight mountain winds up to 100 km/h

A second yellow-code warning takes effect at 23:00 on Monday and lasts until 10:00 on Tuesday, focusing on the Southern and Curvature Carpathians and locally the Apuseni Mountains. Wind speeds of 70–80 km/h are forecast, with gusts above 90–100 km/h at high altitudes. In the first hours of the interval, northeast Moldova will see gusts of 45–50 km/h.

Tuesday's wind intensification in the east

The third warning, active from 10:00 to 20:00 on Tuesday 28 July, covers eastern Moldova and the Curvature Carpathians area. In eastern Moldova, gusts will reach 50–70 km/h, while the Curvature Carpathians will experience 70–90 km/h. Additionally, winds of 45–50 km/h are expected in central Moldova, eastern Transylvania, northern Dobrogea, and western Oltenia.

Bucharest: brief showers and warm temperatures

For the capital, ANM's special forecast indicates temporary cloudiness on Monday, with short afternoon rain showers (2–5 l/m²) and lightning. Wind will be weak to moderate, with slight intensifications during rain (gusts 35–40 km/h). The maximum temperature will be 30–31°C, the minimum 16–19°C. On Tuesday, the weather will be hot, with a maximum around 32°C, variable sky, and possible afternoon and evening showers and lightning.
