John Stones signs two-year deal with Inter Milan after leaving Manchester City as free agent

A new chapter in Milan

John Stones completed a free transfer to Inter Milan on Thursday, signing a two-year contract that runs until 30 June 2028. The 32-year-old England defender became a free agent after his Manchester City deal expired on 30 June, ending a decade-long stay at the Etihad Stadium. The Athletic reported on Monday that Inter were advancing in talks to sign Stones as a free agent, with a deal expected by the end of the week. Inter, the reigning Serie A champions, announced the move with a statement that traced his journey "from the expanses of Barnsley to the San Siro pitch" and declared: "After making history in Manchester, John Stones is ready for his next chapter at Inter." For the first time, the shirt he wears will be black and blue, not just blue. The club noted that after 32 years in England, Stones was ready for a new experience in Italy.

Trophy-laden decade at City

A product of Barnsley's academy, Stones made his name at Everton before joining City in 2016 for a reported £47.5 million (€55 million). He went on to make 295 appearances, scoring 19 goals. His trophy collection includes six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, a total of 18 trophies by some counts. Last season, however, injuries limited him to just 18 appearances in all competitions and only five league starts. Despite that, he remained a key figure for England, earning his 93rd cap at the 2026 World Cup.

International pedigree and World Cup run

Stones was part of Thomas Tuchel's 26-man squad that finished third at the summer tournament. He started the 2-1 quarter-final victory over Norway and the 2-1 semi-final defeat by Argentina. His experience on the international stage adds to the leadership Inter will expect from him.

Reunion with Akanji and competition for his signature

The move reunites Stones with former City teammate Manuel Akanji, who joined Inter permanently this summer after a loan spell. Stones had attracted interest from several European clubs, including Chelsea, Arsenal and Juventus, but chose the Italian champions. Inter won their 21st Serie A title by 11 points last season under coach Christian Chivu, in his first year at the helm, and also beat Lazio in the Coppa Italia final to complete a domestic double.

What Stones said

In his first interview with the club, Stones expressed his emotions.

I feel a lot of emotions. An overwhelming feeling of happiness, pride and excitement. Ready to start this new chapter, this new journey, and what a place to do it.

He added that the decision was straightforward.

When this opportunity came, I spoke with my family and we didn't hesitate to come here. We are excited to get to know another culture, the people, and it is nice that I have some friends here to do that with.

Stones also spoke of his desire to bring his winning experience to the club, saying he had "a great desire to win again" and wanted to help the team and the club.

Inter's title defence

Inter will begin their Serie A title defence against newly promoted Monza on Saturday, 22 August. Stones is expected to add depth and experience to a backline that already features Akanji, as the club aims to retain the Scudetto and compete in the Champions League.
