Stellantis Italian output rises 28.3% to 340,745 units in nine months, union lowers 2026 target
Stellantis produced 340,745 vehicles in Italy during the first nine months of 2026, rising 28.3% over 2025 but remaining below earlier forecasts as union leaders trimmed full-year expectations to 450,000 units.
Production volumes and annual forecast
In the first nine months of 2026, Stellantis produced 340,745 vehicles in Italy, an increase of 28.3% compared to the 265,490 units assembled during the same period in 2025. Passenger car assembly rose 36.7% to 206,945 units, while commercial vehicle manufacturing grew 17.3% to 133,800 units. Despite the rebound from 2025, overall output remains below pre-pandemic and recent benchmarks, trailing the 387,600 vehicles built in the first nine months of 2024 and 462,424 in 2020. The metalworkers union FIM-CISL expects full-year 2026 production to reach around 450,000 units, lowering earlier projections by about 10% due to parts shortages and order contractions. Passenger cars are projected to account for over 250,000 of the full-year total, keeping the annual volume far below the government target of one million vehicles.

Plant performances across Italy
The commercial vehicle facility in Atessa represented the largest share of national manufacturing, delivering 133,800 units or 39.3% of total Italian output, an increase of 17.3% year-on-year that allowed the site to halt social safety net schemes. At Melfi, production climbed 77.2% to 47,580 vehicles, driven by the Jeep Compass, although output remains far below the 201,460 vehicles produced there in 2019. The Turin plant of Mirafiori assembled 46,323 units of the Fiat 500 in electric and hybrid variants, up 151.1% from 18,450 units in 2025. In contrast, the Cassino factory experienced a 37.1% decline to 8,897 cars, operating for roughly 50 days between January and September while logging 118 days of collective stoppages. Pomigliano d'Arco recorded volume growth relative to the first nine months of 2025, supported by the Fiat Panda, though solidarity contracts remain active.
It is evident that the Stellantis target for 2026 will not be reached, and analyzing current production, it is likely that we will settle around 60,000 units. Given the situation, it is evident that the Turin plant cannot sustain itself based on a single model, the 500; we think it is indispensable to assign a second car.
Labor impact and upcoming talks
Overall use of social safety mechanisms across Italian operations fell by more than 30% over the nine-month period, reflecting model rollouts and ongoing workforce reductions. At Melfi, 87 collective stoppage days resulted in 123 lost shifts, with daily solidarity contracts affecting an average of 1,640 workers, while incentivized departures reduced the site workforce by 2,850 employees since 2021 to 4,390 staff. In addition, roughly 330 workers from Melfi remain temporarily assigned to other group plants. At Mirafiori, where Stellantis had targeted 100,000 units annually across hybrid and electric drivetrains, management scheduled two weeks of furlough for October. Union representatives warned that current run rates threaten approximately 600 temporary jobs at the Turin facility.
The real challenge is to transform new models and investments into higher production volumes, a reduction in social safety nets, and concrete employment prospects.
Future model pipeline and product roadmap
Union officials and company management have scheduled a formal meeting on 15 October 2026 to discuss the slump at Cassino and manufacturing allocations for Mirafiori. Melfi is scheduled to expand production in the second half of 2026 with the DS7 and Lancia Gamma, followed by an Alfa Romeo model planned by 2028. At Mirafiori, an electric Fiat 500 featuring Stellantis batteries is scheduled to enter production in 2027, with the next generation of the 500e slated for 2030. Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso previously considered the automotive negotiation table settled on company commitments regarding employment and volumes.
