Spotify expands audiobooks to 180 markets with 350,000 titles in 120 languages
Spotify announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair that it is expanding its audiobook service from 22 markets to more than 180 countries by the end of 2026, granting access to more than 750 million listeners across 120 languages.
Global expansion at the Frankfurt Book Fair
At the Frankfurt Book Fair on 7 October 2026, Spotify announced an expansion of its audiobook catalogue from 22 existing markets to more than 180 countries by the end of 2026. The rollout opens access to an audience of more than 750 million users across regions including Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Spotify, which reported 777 million total users and 300 million Premium subscribers globally, had previously restricted audiobook streaming primarily to English-speaking countries and Germany. The new deployment incorporates a catalogue of more than 350,000 titles spanning over 120 languages, adding regional offerings in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Polish.
Books change how we see the world, and the people in it. For a lot of people, audiobooks are how they find their way back to reading, on the commute, on a walk, or at the end of a long day. Bringing audiobooks to more than 180 markets means millions more people can discover that, and authors and publishers can reach readers they've never been able to reach before.
Subscription tiers and listening limits
Under the expanded model, Spotify Premium subscribers in eligible rollout countries receive 12 hours of included audiobook listening each month. In Italy and Spain, this monthly allocation applies to individual accounts as well as the primary user on Duo and Family subscriptions. Users who exceed their monthly allotment can purchase an Audiobooks+ add-on, which provides 15 hours of listening time for 8.99 euros per month, or buy 10-hour top-up packages priced at 9.99 euros. Individual titles also remain available for direct standalone purchase without an active subscription. Spotify plans to extend a discounted version of the Audiobooks+ add-on to student plan holders in Ireland, Belgium, Austria, and Finland starting in November 2026.

Publishing partnerships and non-exclusive strategy
Spotify is collaborating with more than 300 publishers worldwide to supply local literary selections, including Planeta and Gruppo Mondadori. In Spain, the launch provides immediate access to more than 45,000 Spanish-language titles, while Italian users receive a curated catalogue of more than 14,000 Italian titles from publishers such as Giunti Editore, Emons Audio, Fazi Editore, and Giuntina. Unlike its earlier podcast strategy, which relied on acquisitions totaling roughly $650 million between 2019 and 2020 alongside exclusive personality contracts, Spotify has structured all publisher agreements on a non-exclusive basis. This allows identical audiobooks to remain available on competing platforms such as Audible and Storytel.
Technology features and user adoption
The company also expanded its reading synchronization tool, known as Page Match, by adding page number indexing. The feature allows readers to scan a book's ISBN barcode and jump to the corresponding point in the audiobook, supporting works across more than 30 languages. Spotify reported that 1 million monthly users currently employ the tool, which accelerates book completion speeds by 2.5 times. In addition, the platform is introducing author countdown pages to let listeners pre-save forthcoming audiobooks directly to their libraries ahead of publication day.
It's incredibly effective at building anticipation and driving day-one listening.
Between September 2025 and September 2026, monthly audiobook listeners on Spotify increased by nearly 40%, while total listening hours grew by more than 30%. The standalone Audiobooks+ subscription reached 1 million subscribers over the past year, generating more than $100 million in annual recurring revenue.
