Netflix launches AI Discover, a mood-based recommendation tab, for some US TV users

The streamer's new tab lets subscribers pick themes such as Scare Me or Quick Watches, with a feedback option that stops rejected titles from returning. It is limited to English-language users in the United States for now.

What Netflix launched

Netflix has added AI Discover, a new tab in its TV app that recommends films and series by mood and theme rather than by genre. The tab sits in the top navigation bar, marked by a red gem icon and a "New" label. It went live on Tuesday, 3 November 2026 for a limited group of subscribers in the United States who use Netflix in English on compatible televisions. Netflix has not said when the feature will arrive in other markets. BFMTV reported that it is not available in France, and SAPO said no date has been set for Portugal.

How the themes work

Subscribers choose from themes such as "Something Light", "Scare Me", "Family Movie Night" and "Quick Watches". The Independent also lists "Workplace Comedy Favorites", "Family Scandal Sagas" and "Royal Court Intrigue". Each theme comes with a preview clip from a film or show, and selecting one brings up a set of suggestions. Further sub-themes let users narrow the search, while "Something Different" returns another batch of titles. Each recommended title also has a "Tune Your Recommendations" button beside Play and My List. From there a viewer can keep a suggestion or ask that a title not be suggested again. Netflix says it remembers that feedback within AI Discover.

Technology and the company's account

Netflix describes the feature as powered by a new intelligence layer that responds to members in real time and keeps learning. La Razón said the tool was developed entirely in-house by Netflix engineers, in contrast to earlier alliances with OpenAI for its basic search. According to The Independent, Netflix has relied on machine learning and AI for years, drawing on viewing histories and titles that users give a thumbs-up. BFMTV described AI Discover as more advanced than the viewing-history algorithm already on the platform. In its announcement, Netflix framed the tab as an experiment:

“Think of AI Discover as our test kitchen: we're trying out new recipes for discovery”

Rollout and wider context

Netflix intends to widen the rollout in the weeks ahead, but it has not named a date for other regions. ZDNet noted that most streaming apps already rely on AI-driven recommendation algorithms, such as Prime Video's "Recommended for you" tab, while YouTube offers Gemini-powered search. Adnkronos linked the launch to a slowdown in growth and to layoffs of about 1,000 employees, arguing that the company needs to keep subscribers and reduce friction in choosing what to watch. The same outlet said viewers now spend fewer hours in front of Netflix's programmes than in the past. BFMTV also noted that the tab's red gem icon recalls Gemini.

What remains unclear

The sources do not say how many subscribers have access to the feature. They also do not say whether AI Discover will replace the existing recommendation rows on the home screen. Netflix has described the tab as a test, and it has not set out the criteria it will use to decide which recipes to keep. Any expansion beyond English-language US users has no announced timetable.
