Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens to $360 million in North America, beating Avengers: Endgame's domestic record

The domestic record

Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" earned $360 million from 4,487 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, according to Monday actuals released by the studio. The figure climbed past the $355 million estimate Sony had projected on Sunday, overtaking the previous record of $357 million set by "Avengers: Endgame" in April 2019. Before Endgame, no film had opened above $300 million domestically. The previous record holders were "Avengers: Infinity War" with $257 million in 2018 and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $247 million in 2015. The third Holland Spider-Man film, "No Way Home," debuted to $260 million in December 2021 during the pandemic.

Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.

Global performance

The film collected an estimated $572 million from international markets, bringing its worldwide opening to $932 million. That makes it the second-biggest global launch in history, behind only "Avengers: Endgame," which took $1.22 billion worldwide in its opening frame. The global total already places "Brand New Day" as the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2026, surpassing Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" after only a few days in release. The top three films of the year so far are "Toy Story 5," "Michael," and "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."

Single-day and preview records

"Brand New Day" also set the record for the biggest single opening day, earning $168 million on Friday and surpassing the mark set by "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019. On Saturday it added another $101.5 million. The film had already claimed the record for the largest Thursday preview grosses and became Sony's best-ever launch. Before the weekend, Sony had initially projected a much more modest start of $195 million domestic and $465 million global.

Audience and critical reception

The film earned an A CinemaScore from audiences and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes from over 10,000 fans. Its critics score on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 90%. The audience skewed young and male: 36% of viewers were between ages 18 and 24, and 61% were men. The Hollywood Reporter's chief film critic David Rooney praised "a never-better Tom Holland."

What's far more important to me, and what is far more significant, is the response. The audience loved the movie. That's way more important to me than this record or that record.

The production

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film stars Tom Holland in his fourth solo outing as Peter Parker, alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo. It carries a $225 million production budget and was produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal. The story follows Parker fighting crime in a world that has forgotten he is Spider-Man, including his girlfriend MJ, played by Zendaya, while facing a villain who can enter people's minds.

International and local markets

In Portugal, the film opened to €1.4 million from 193,207 admissions across 161 screens and 1,391 sessions between Thursday and Sunday, making it the biggest opening weekend of the year in the country. In Switzerland, it earned over 2.7 million francs since its Wednesday opening, the best start for any film since January 2023 and the strongest entry in the Spider-Man franchise there. The film also posted the biggest opening in China, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. The combined strength of "Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey," which share actors Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, helped drive a record overall weekend for North American theaters. According to Rentrak, the domestic box office is up over 15% from last year with more than $6.2 billion in ticket sales to date.
