Spidercam falls onto pitch in Hungary-Kazakhstan friendly, narrowly missing cameraman

Incident

A spidercam suspended over the pitch at Nagyerdei Stadium in Debrecen fell more than 20 metres during the first half of the Hungary versus Kazakhstan friendly on Tuesday. Hungarian media reported that the camera began emitting smoke midway through the half after fire damaged its supporting cable. The device then dropped suddenly, striking the turf close to the touchline near Hungary's warm-up area.

Near miss

Video footage from the stands showed the camera landing two metres from a pitch-side cameraman, who was clearly startled. The operator was unhurt, and no players were in the immediate vicinity at the moment of impact. The incident halted the match in the 26th minute as referees and security staff assessed the situation.

Clear-up and resumption

Workers removed the mangled remains of the equipment while players hydrated and regrouped. The brief interruption lasted only a few minutes before play resumed without further disruption. No injuries were reported.

Match progression

Kazakhstan had taken an early lead through Sergey Maliy in the ninth minute. Hungary responded after the break with a strong second-half performance. Dominik Szoboszlai equalised, András Schäfer scored a spectacular long-range goal, and Rajmund Tóth added a third to seal a 3-1 comeback victory.

The spidercam collapse is not an isolated case. Similar incidents have occurred at other events in recent years, though most have not resulted in personal harm. The viral video from Debrecen has prompted renewed questions about the safety protocols for these increasingly common broadcast cameras, with many fans noting that the outcome could have been far worse.
