Spain stumble at World Cup opener, held to 0-0 draw by debutants Cape Verde
Spain’s World Cup campaign began with a shock as Cape Verde, making their tournament debut, held the European champions to a 0-0 draw in Group H on Monday.
Spanish possession, but no breakthrough
Spain dominated from the first whistle but found the Cape Verde goal elusive. The first real attempt came in the 36th minute when Pedri’s shot was tipped over by Vozinha, though the move was already flagged offside. Three minutes later, Rodri curled a cross for Cucurella, whose header found Ferran Torres; the forward slammed against the crossbar from two yards, and Vozinha denied Oyarzabal on the rebound. Ferran Torres missed another chance before half-time, and Laporte’s header from a corner forced a diving save from the keeper.
Vozinha and Cape Verde’s defensive wall
The 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha was the standout performer, repeatedly frustrating the Spanish attack. Behind him, Cape Verde’s back line stayed compact and organised. In the 73rd minute, substitute Merino’s tame strike was smothered, and nine minutes later Cucurella headed weakly from Yamal’s cross. With two minutes remaining, defender Pico Lopes threw his body in front of a close-range Oyarzabal attempt that would have been on target. Cape Verde’s only chance of the match fell to Borges, whose header from a corner was comfortably collected by Unai Simón in stoppage time.
We must continue to insist with our ideas, improving the finishing. There are matches where you can produce a lot but the ball doesn’t go in. We have to know how to handle these situations as well.
Yamal’s arrival fails to change the outcome
Lamine Yamal, rested as a precaution, entered in the 71st minute but could not unlock the defence. The introduction of Nico Williams and Dani Olmo also did little to alter a match in which Spain’s circulation of the ball was criticised by their coach.
They are very organised. From the first moment their objective was to give us no space. We lacked a faster circulation of the ball. The aim was also to give minutes to Yamal and Williams. They will be better for the next matches.
Historic night for Cape Verde
The final whistle triggered celebrations among Cape Verde’s players and fans, who had witnessed their country’s first ever World Cup point. The draw leaves Group H poised ahead of the later clash between Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
