Two trains, one collision near Urda

On Wednesday, 28 October, an AVE train operated by Renfe collided with an Iryo train between Los Yébenes and Urda in the province of Toledo. Both were bound for Seville from Madrid. Emiliano Garcia-Page, president of Castilla-La Mancha, gave a provisional count of at least 68 dead and 107 injured, 18 of them in critical condition. A later count from the regional authorities put the injured at 183: 107 treated in Castilla-La Mancha hospitals and 76 in Madrid. Four remain in intensive care and about ten are in critical condition.

The Renfe train carried 378 people, and 24 of the dead were on board. The Iryo carried 147 people, including a newborn, and 44 of the dead were on it.

Missing persons and foreign nationals

The Guardia Civil has received 64 missing-person reports: 38 in Toledo, 19 in Madrid, six in Seville and one in Logroño. Officers say the list must still be checked against the people in hospital, so the figure is provisional. Three Italian citizens are among the missing, Italy's foreign ministry confirmed, and it is working with the embassy and consulate general in Madrid. The Spanish employers' confederation, CEOE, said it still has no news of Fátima Báñez, president of its foundation and a former employment minister, who was travelling on one of the trains.

“We are still without news of Fátima Báñez, president of the CEOE Foundation, who was travelling yesterday on one of the trains involved.”

Relatives of a manager of the bullfighter Paco Aguado also say they still have no information about his whereabouts or condition. A woman from Alicante is among the missing, according to the city's mayor, Luis Barcala, who said her family is still living with uncertainty.

Rescue work and survivors

More than 200 Guardia Civil officers are working at the site, and about 500 have been mobilised since the crash. Around 100 soldiers from the army's emergency unit (UME) and more than 110 civil protection workers are also involved. Search teams with dogs are looking for survivors or human remains. The judiciary has barred unauthorised people from the area. Andalusia's councillor for development and mobility, Mario Muñoz-Atanet Sánchez, confirmed that his wife was among the survivors. She was on car seven of the AVE, one of the most damaged, and was treated in Alcázar de San Juan for a broken rib and a mild pneumothorax before returning to Seville. Speaking to Antena 3, he described her condition:

“All things considered, she is well.”

Political reaction and support

Sumar has asked for Transport Minister Óscar Puente to appear before the Congress's Diputación Permanente over the crash. The request was announced on social media by Ada Colau, the Frente Amplio candidate. Antonio Maíllo, federal coordinator of IU, said Frente Amplio will demand maximum transparency and called for an independent review of the rail network:

“An independent audit must be carried out to analyse the state of the rail network. We will demand full information and the technical and political responsibilities that follow.”

Antonio Maíllo, federal coordinator of IU

Victims' associations from the 2013 Angrois crash and the January 2026 Adamuz accident issued a joint statement saying the Toledo crash is not an isolated event. They called for independent investigations and pointed to two EU infringement procedures against Spain over rail safety that followed the Angrois derailment. The union UGT activated a free psychological support service, in person and by phone, through the Fundación Psicología Sin Fronteras. In Palencia, the council moved its Halloween programme from 31 October to 1 November after three days of mourning were declared, and cancelled a reception for flamenco choreographer María Pagés and performances at the Teatro Principal on 29 and 30 October.
