Conflict over special fan train cancellations
The scheduling adjustment follows a dispute between Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the participating football clubs. Under an operational rule introduced for the 2026–2027 season, SBB operates dedicated fan trains only during hours when regular scheduled train services are running. SBB stated that multiple construction sites across the Valais rail corridor prevented the company from offering a late-night fan service back to Zürich. The rail company stated that it notified the league, FC Zürich, and supporter associations during schedule planning that no special train would be provided on 19 September 2026. FC Zürich rejected SBB's characterisation of events, arguing that the rail operator concealed its general policy change and pursued an escalation strategy in its public statements.
The FCZ had already applied to the SFL on 8 September 2026 for a postponement of the match. The request was initially rejected with the reference that only an official order makes such a postponement possible.

The decision in Valais marks the second consecutive week in which Swiss football fixtures required rescheduling due to the elimination of late-night fan trains. League organizers previously had to move kickoff times for matches involving FC Lugano, including fixtures against FC St. Gallen and Young Boys, because visiting fans faced identical transit bottlenecks. The Swiss Football League reached the agreement to advance the Sion match in consultation with broadcast partners and the clubs, ensuring that Zürich supporters can depart on regular timetable services before overnight rail operations cease.
