Saudi Arabia closes East-West pipeline following drone attacks launched from Iraq

Pipeline attack and infrastructure damage

On Thursday, 10 September, drone strikes hit Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline across pumping installations in the Riyadh and Medina provinces. The 1,200-kilometer line connects Abqaiq near the Persian Gulf to the port of Yanbu on the Red Sea, carrying roughly 4% to 5% of global oil supply with a total capacity of 7 million barrels per day. The Saudi Ministry of Energy announced a precautionary shutdown on Friday, reporting multiple injuries along with physical damage that remains under assessment. Satellite imagery recorded smoke and burnt areas near the strike sites as emergency teams moved to inspect and secure the conduit. The conduit had operated at maximum capacity earlier in the year to bypass tanker disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Baghdad closes crossings and removes commander

Iraqi authorities established that the unmanned aircraft were launched from an isolated zone in the southern province of Maysan near the Iranian border. Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi dismissed the provincial military commander of Maysan and ordered an immediate inquiry into the incident. Baghdad closed three border crossings with Iran (the Shalamcheh crossing in Basra, al-Sheeb in Maysan, and al-Mandali in Diyala) to prevent weapon smuggling and locate the perpetrators. Prime Minister spokesman Sabah al-Numan stated that al-Zaidi approved a request from Iran to conduct a joint investigation along the frontier. Saudi officials announced they would postpone retaliatory strikes following direct contact with al-Zaidi, though Riyadh affirmed its right to protect sovereign infrastructure.

Escalation across Yemen and the Red Sea

The infrastructure disruption occurred during simultaneous territorial advances by Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen. Houthi units seized the coastal city of Mokha, located 80 kilometers north of the Bab el-Mandeb strait, forcing civilian displacement toward the government seat in Aden. Yemeni government forces responded with counter-strikes against Houthi positions across Mokha, Taiz, and Ibb provinces. Houthi fighters also launched missile and drone barrages targeting Saudi energy infrastructure in Abha, Najran, and Jizan. Eurasia Group geopolitical analyst Gregory Brew commented on the security exposure of regional networks to Bloomberg.

a pretty clear sign that both Iran and its proxies have both the capability and the intent to target regional energy infrastructure, and that infrastructure is vulnerable to ballistic missile or drone attacks

Diplomatic reactions and energy market impact

Brent crude settled at $104.56 per barrel on Friday, finishing the week up by more than 8% after briefly reaching nearly $110 on Thursday. The Gulf Cooperation Council condemned the pipeline strikes as a dangerous escalation across regional transit routes. Speaking to journalists in Dublin after meeting Irish President Catherine Connolly, US President Donald Trump stated that Tehran was probably behind the operation. Trump confirmed conversations with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and asserted that Houthi officials communicated their desire to avoid direct confrontation with Washington.

They would much rather we did not get involved, and they are letting most ships through. There is only one country they are not too happy with, and we will get that straightened out.
