Hostile slogans target Matteo Salvini in Pontida ahead of annual Lega rally

White paint on asphalt, walls, and lampposts across Pontida targeted Matteo Salvini on 19 September 2026 before the start of Lega's annual two-day gathering. Slogans written in the style of cycling race road markings accused the party leader of betrayal and attacked his policy initiatives, displaying messages such as "Ponte=mafia" and "- mojito + treni". Tensions have built between Salvini and northern party factions associated with regional governors, including Lombardy president Attilio Fontana and Senate group leader Massimiliano Romeo.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Salvini sought to dampen disputes before the gathering.

I do not believe Lega members want controversy at the rally. There will also be a tribute to the absolute genius who brought us together there: Umberto Bossi.

Salvini also held a meeting on Thursday afternoon in Milan with regional leaders Attilio Fontana, Luca Zaia, Massimiliano Fedriga, and Maurizio Fugatti to ask that attendees refrain from booing during the weekend events. Protests have also surfaced within the party's youth wing against Lega Giovani coordinator and deputy Luca Toccalini. Salvini is scheduled to attend the Padania Giovani gathering on Saturday evening before giving his main address from the rally stage on Sunday.
