Russian drone strikes train near Polish border after Western officials pass through

Strike on the Warsaw-Kyiv rail link

A Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train travelling from Kyiv to Warsaw on 13 September 2026. The strike occurred at the Yahodyn railway station in Volyn Oblast, approximately two kilometres from Ukraine's border with Poland. Ukrainian railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia detected the drone threat beforehand and evacuated all passengers, preventing injuries on board. Wider Russian drone attacks across Ukraine on Sunday killed at least six people, with multiple western regions targeted. In a concurrent attack near the Dorohusk-Yagodyn crossing, another drone struck a petrol station and ignited several cargo trucks less than one kilometre from Polish territory. The bombing represents the first direct hit on the Warsaw-Kyiv railway corridor, which has operated as Ukraine's primary diplomatic and logistical link to Europe since the closure of national airspace in 2022.

Near miss for Western delegations

The strike occurred shortly after senior Western officials travelled along the same railway line upon departing the annual Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv. The departing officials included former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, former CIA Director David Petraeus, former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, and several European Union national security advisers. Ukrzaliznytsia reported that the diplomatic delegation was initially scheduled to pass through Yahodyn at the exact moment of the strike, but railway authorities rescheduled the train to depart earlier due to Russian air raid alerts. A separate train carrying David Petraeus remained at the border station shortly before the explosion. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called the attack a calculated escalation designed to create fear among European allies.

It is all the more important that we remain levelheaded, that we do not allow ourselves to be provoked, but that at the same time we leave no doubt that we are capable of defending ourselves. What Vladimir Putin is doing is dangerous. He knows that, and that is why he is doing it.

Intensified strikes near NATO and European borders

The incident at Yahodyn is part of a pattern of Russian strikes targeting border crossings and logistics hubs between Ukraine and neighbouring European states. On 9 September 2026, a Russian drone strike on the Starokozache border crossing with Moldova killed two people and shut down cross-border traffic for several days. Russian forces also launched at least two drone strikes against the Orlivka crossing on the Romanian border in early September. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated at an Arctic summit in Rovaniemi, Finland, that the attacks aim to discourage Western officials from visiting Ukraine and undermine European unity.

Diplomatic reactions in Europe and Moscow

The incident occurred two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin warned at a BRICS summit in New Delhi that any European troop or peacekeeping deployment to Ukraine would mean war with Russia. In response to the border incident, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency government security meeting in Warsaw to evaluate border security risks.

These coming weeks and months will be a time of very intensified actions on the Russian side, and unfortunately we cannot rule out that this escalation will also affect our territory.

Moscow defended its military actions on Monday. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated during a press briefing that Russian forces will continue operations throughout all Ukrainian territory, while declining to specifically address the strike on the passenger locomotive.

It is a question of Ukrainian territory. Our military is carrying out its missions across the entire territory of Ukraine and will continue to do so.
