Danish intelligence uncovers Russian sabotage plots

The Danish Security and Intelligence Service has uncovered concrete preparations by Russian intelligence services to carry out sabotage operations within Denmark. Emil Græsholm, the head of counterintelligence at the agency known as PET, confirmed the findings in statements to Danish media outlets DR and Berlingske. Counterintelligence investigators established that foreign intelligence agencies are actively organizing actions specifically aimed at industrial infrastructure. While the security service typically maintains strict confidentiality regarding its ongoing operational findings, leadership decided that the immediate nature of the intelligence required a direct public disclosure. Companies operating within the defense sector received immediate notices to re-evaluate their physical protection measures and strengthen internal security standards.

Defense sector and Ukraine weapons production targeted

The primary targets identified by the counterintelligence agency encompass manufacturing facilities that supply military hardware, arms, and ammunition to Ukraine. Russian intelligence services have focused attention on Danish arms producers as well as Ukrainian defense manufacturers operating industrial facilities inside Denmark. Counterintelligence officers identified arson as a specific mechanism included in the Russian operational planning. PET determined that Russian operatives are tracking the overall defense industry across the country, with the threat expected to increase steadily in both scale and operational complexity. Industrial facilities linked to the supply chain for the Ukrainian military face the most acute exposure under the current operational assessment.

The main goal is to stop concrete deliveries for Ukrainian defense. At the same time, the intention is to instill fear in us so that we no longer support the Ukrainians and do not expand our own defense capability.

Recruitment of local residents for reconnaissance

Russian intelligence agencies are attempting to recruit ordinary Danish citizens to conduct on-the-ground reconnaissance for planned attacks. Operatives seek individuals to take photographs and record video footage of industrial plants, transport hubs, and defense installations without revealing the ultimate beneficiary of the tasks. Counterintelligence officials warned that residents may be manipulated into acting as spotters or logistical facilitators without realizing they are assisting Moscow. Emil Græsholm urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious solicitations regarding critical industrial infrastructure. Security services emphasized that domestic assistance to foreign espionage networks poses severe legal and national security implications.

It is extremely serious if Danish citizens help the Russian intelligence services, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Hybrid threats and broader European security alerts

The sabotage preparations in Denmark coincide with heightened security vigilance across Europe regarding Russian hybrid operations. Intelligence agencies across several European Union member states have detected coordinated sabotage planning, arson plots, and surveillance against defense suppliers aiding Kyiv. In Germany, authorities recently identified two suspects linked to an explosive-laden drone incident at Leipzig airport, involving a Russian citizen holding a Latvian passport and a Belarusian national with Russian travel documents. Danish authorities stated that Moscow seeks to erode political cohesion and deter Western partners from sustaining long-term military deliveries to Ukraine. PET confirmed it will continue monitoring industrial sites to prevent planned disruptions against the domestic defense manufacturing base.
