Romanian specialists have completed a technical report into the drone that struck a block of flats in the eastern city of Galați on the night of Thursday, 28 May 2026. President Nicușor Dan announced the results in a social media post on Sunday, stating the conclusion is unequivocal: the wreckage belongs to a Geran-2 drone of Russian origin. The investigation was built on what the president described as a consistent body of technical evidence.

Physical evidence recovered

Investigators identified the Cyrillic inscription "ГЕРАН-2" on recovered fragments. Electronic components, navigation systems, command modules, the engine, and structural elements all showed similarities verging on identity with other Geran-2 drones previously recovered on Romanian territory and definitively identified as manufactured in the Russian Federation. Manufacturing markings, technical inscriptions, construction characteristics, and materials used follow the same technological process observed in Geran-2 drones analysed in recent years. Physico-chemical analyses confirmed the presence of the same types of materials and fuels repeatedly identified in devices from this series.

Casualties and damage

The drone struck a residential apartment block, causing two injuries and material damage. President Nicușor Dan characterised the incident as one of particular gravity, given the impact on a civilian structure and the consequences for the population.
