Discovery in a Neamț forest

On Thursday, 5 November, a husband and wife collecting mushrooms in a forest near Boghicea, in Neamț County, came across plastic and metal fragments around midday. Believing they had found pieces of a crashed all-terrain vehicle, the couple filmed the debris and sent the footage to their son. After seeing the video, the son told his parents to call the emergency number 112 right away. The Neamț County Police Inspectorate said the fragments were scattered over an estimated 200 to 300 metres, while one outlet gave the same figure in square metres. The remains lay about 3 kilometres from the inhabited area, and the village is only a few kilometres from the city of Roman.

Police, firefighters and SRI respond

A man had first alerted police at the Sagna rural station, and officers from ISU Neamț, the county emergency inspectorate, were sent to the site with specialised equipment. A pyrotechnic team from the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) also went to the forest. Police, soldiers, firefighters, gendarmes and SRI staff were reportedly gathered at the site within half an hour. Specialists tagged every element they found and checked each component to make sure the debris contained no active explosive charge.

Controlled detonation and RO-Alert warning

ISU Neamț warned residents of Boghicea through the RO-Alert system that a controlled detonation would take place in the Slobozia forest and would produce a loud noise. The alert, sent in Romanian and English, asked people not to panic and to follow the recommendations of the authorities. After several hours of examination, the specialists detonated the remains on the evening of Thursday, 5 November. The alert itself described the operation as the destruction of munitions.

Link to the 31 October drone incursion

The debris was found close to the area where one of two drones was last tracked during the incursion on Saturday, 31 October. On that day, Romanian authorities issued RO-Alert warnings to residents of six counties in the Moldova region, including Neamț and Bacău. The Ministry of National Defence scrambled four F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter to monitor two unmanned aerial targets that had entered national airspace. According to the flight path recorded that day, one drone left Romanian territory, while the second disappeared from radar at the boundary of Vaslui and Bacău counties, near Boghicea.

What remains unconfirmed

Neither the Ministry of National Defence nor judicial authorities had confirmed that the pieces recovered at Boghicea belonged to the drone tracked over the weekend. Verification work to establish the origin and nature of the debris was in full swing at the site. The location lies near the flight path of the second drone, but officials have not linked the two events. No official statement had yet identified the aircraft the fragments came from.
