Russell grabs Barcelona pole ahead of Hamilton, as Antonelli faces steward reprimand and Leclerc crashes
George Russell secured pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, edging out Lewis Hamilton by just 0.064 seconds, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli received a practice reprimand and Charles Leclerc crashed out of Q3.
On Saturday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, George Russell delivered a pole-position lap of one minute 14.679 seconds, edging out Lewis Hamilton by just 0.064 seconds. Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, had to settle for third after a practice-day reprimand for dangerous driving, while Charles Leclerc crashed heavily in the final qualifying segment and will start tenth.
Practice tensions
Russell had already topped two of the three practice sessions, including Friday’s opening hour. On Saturday morning, he repeated the feat, clocking 1:15.679, but his teammate Antonelli, winner of the last five grands prix, could manage only seventh fastest and lost his temper after being blocked by Lance Stroll.
The stewards later summoned Antonelli, who admitted braking in front of Stroll out of frustration, and handed him his first reprimand of the season. Why do I always get traffic?! I don't understand, everyone always in the lap.
The driver admitted during the hearing that he acted out of frustration and apologised for his action.
Qualifying: Russell pips Hamilton
In the afternoon session, Russell improved further, posting 1:14.679 to take pole. Hamilton, now at Ferrari, was just 0.064 seconds slower, marking his first front-row start since July 2024. Antonelli ended up 0.319 seconds off the pace and will line up third, the first time this season he has not claimed a front-row slot. The top six cars were within four tenths: Lando Norris (McLaren) fourth, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) fifth, and Frenchman Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) sixth.

Leclerc’s Q3 accident
Charles Leclerc’s weekend unravelled when he lost control of his Ferrari through Turn 4 with eight minutes remaining in Q3. The impact was severe enough to bring out a red flag while his car was cleared. The Monegasque driver, who had been second fastest in Q2, will start only tenth. It follows his crash a week earlier at the Monaco Grand Prix, where he also hit the wall in qualifying and subsequently retired from the race. He has not reached the podium since the Japanese Grand Prix on 29 March.
French drivers in trouble
Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and Esteban Ocon (Haas) continued their recent struggles. Gasly could manage only 14th, while Ocon was eliminated in Q1 for the third consecutive race and will start 17th. In contrast, Isack Hadjar secured a strong sixth place on the grid after a solid qualifying effort for Red Bull. Elsewhere, Valtteri Bottas’s practice session ended in the gravel at Turn 10, triggering a brief red flag.
