Formula 1: Kimi Antonelli wins inaugural Madrid Grand Prix as Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton retire

Antonelli takes victory at inaugural Madring race

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the inaugural Formula 1 race at the newly constructed Madring street circuit in Madrid on Sunday. The victory marks the Italian driver's eighth win of the season, extending his lead in the Drivers' Championship standings. Antonelli stayed near the front of the field throughout the afternoon, maintaining pressure until the closing stages of the Grand Prix. Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen crossed the finish line in second place, while McLaren's Lando Norris took third after leading from the start of the race. The event unfolded across the purpose-built IFEMA layout without red flags, featuring limited overtaking opportunities and relying heavily on pit lane execution.

Strategy and mechanical retirements shape the podium

The opening laps produced immediate tension when Verstappen ran wide at the second corner to avoid Lewis Hamilton, briefly taking the position before stewards intervened. Defending his maneuver over team radio, Verstappen explained the incident to his garage.

Lewis was out of control. I had no other choice.

Hamilton was later forced to retire his Ferrari due to a brake failure while running in podium contention, making him the first driver to retire from a Grand Prix at Madring. Charles Leclerc attempted an alternate strategy for Ferrari, extending his opening tire stint to lead a significant portion of the race as rivals made their pit stops. Leclerc finally pitted with eight laps remaining, returning to the circuit in fourth place behind Norris. Aston Martin's Lance Stroll also retired, triggering the only Virtual Safety Car deployment of the afternoon, while Sergio Pérez stopped on lap 34.

Difficult home outing for Spanish drivers

Local competitors faced multiple complications throughout the afternoon. Williams driver Carlos Sainz encountered difficulties at the start alongside Yuki Tsunoda before becoming involved in an on-track clash with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso. Race stewards handed Sainz a five-second time penalty for pushing Alonso toward the wall, which the Spanish driver served during his opening pit stop. Sainz gained positions following the retirement of Pérez on lap 34, but his Williams suffered a mechanical fault that forced the team to retire the car on lap 46, ten laps from the scheduled finish. Alonso sustained car damage in the earlier contact with Sainz, struggling with performance before crossing the finish line in 17th position as the penultimate classified finisher.

Madrid returns to the Formula 1 calendar

The event marked the return of Formula 1 racing to the Spanish capital after a 45-year absence, operating under a race contract that runs through 2036. A crowd of 125,000 spectators filled the grandstands around the IFEMA exhibition complex, with prominent sections such as La Monumental overlooking the circuit's banked corner. The race drew notable institutional and celebrity figures, led by King Felipe VI alongside his daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía. Members of the Real Madrid football team, tennis player Rafael Nadal, and IFEMA president José Vicente de los Mozos were also present in the paddock as Madrid completed its first championship round on the newly built urban course.
