Yildirim stated that he holds authority over managerial appointments and ordered the 65-year-old tactician to continue his duties.

Bottle incident and supporter pressure

Yildirim explained that Kartal felt overwhelmed by constant media criticism and had reacted emotionally to an incident during the Roma match. A spectator in the stands threw a water bottle that struck Kartal in the head during play, prompting the manager to consider his future at the club. Fenerbahce later posted on social media that security identified the offending individual and banned the spectator from entering the stadium. The club president criticised the hostile atmosphere, demanding that fans and reporters respect the manager instead of undermining him through persistent attacks and unrest.

Managerial history and domestic form

Kartal took over the team in June 2026 for his fourth managerial spell, having previously served in 2014-15, on an interim basis in 2021-22, and during the full 2023-24 campaign. He also spent a decade as a player at Fenerbahce and worked as an assistant manager during the club's last two Turkish Super Lig championship seasons. The squad, which features Portuguese defender Nelson Semedo, currently sits in ninth place in the domestic league following two wins and two defeats. Across all 11 competitive fixtures in the 2026-27 season, Fenerbahce have recorded six wins, three draws, and two losses, as the club attempts to end a sequence of five consecutive second-place league finishes.
