Accounts of the birth differ. The Carpentras prosecutor's office, quoted by AFP, says the 32-year-old woman gave birth at home on Sunday 26 July to a healthy boy and was taken to hospital afterwards. Le Parisien reports that she went to the hospital on Monday evening with abdominal pain, without her partner, denied being pregnant there and gave birth to the healthy boy at the hospital. Her partner, who had not known about the pregnancy, became concerned about the very late detection and, on Monday, began searching their home. He told investigators he argued with his wife about a box, opened it, and found a decomposing body. He then alerted the hospital, which called the police.

That evening, DCOS officers searched the flat. A neighbour, Philippe Constant, told AFP he was woken around 11 p.m. by the police. Inside, they found the bones of four infants and the decomposing body of a fifth. A forensic examination confirmed the remains were those of five newborns.

Arrests and investigation

The woman was discharged from hospital on Wednesday, July 29, and immediately taken into custody. Her partner was arrested a few hours later. The Carpentras prosecutor's office opened an investigation for the murder of a minor under fifteen. Both are in police custody, the French garde a vue, while questioning continues. Carpentras has since handed the case to the Avignon prosecutor's office, and the mother was taken into custody in Avignon.

The couple's two other children, aged 8 and 9 (some reports say 12), have been placed under the supervision of child welfare services. A family court judge will decide the future of the newborn boy, who is in good health and has been placed in provisional care.

A "very discreet" couple

Neighbours described the pair as unremarkable. One resident told Libération she had never seen the woman with a pregnant belly. Another, quoted by Spiegel, called them "charming people" who had moved into the neighbourhood about two years earlier. The man worked during the day while the woman stayed home, picking up the children from school at lunchtime. "Perfectly normal people," the neighbour said.

Pregnancy denial and past cases

Several French media reports have raised the possibility of pregnancy denial, a psychological phenomenon in which a woman is unaware of her own pregnancy and shows few physical signs. According to research cited by NOS, it occurs in roughly 1 in 500 pregnancies. The exact definition remains debated within the medical community.

France has seen similar cases. In February 2026, a woman was arrested in Haute-Saône after two babies were found in a freezer. In 2022, two newborns were discovered in comparable circumstances in Bédoin, also in Vaucluse. The most severe case involved Dominique Cottrez, who was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2015 for killing eight newborns; the court acknowledged her impaired judgment.

What happens next

Autopsy results are pending. The investigation will seek to determine the causes of death and whether the woman acted alone. The prosecutor has not yet commented on possible charges beyond the murder-of-minors framework. The two older children remain in temporary care, and the newborn's placement will be decided by a judge.
