Four infant skeletons and decomposing newborn found in boxes at Orange, France home; murder investigation launched
A 32-year-old woman gave birth at home on Sunday before her partner, learning late of the pregnancy, searched their flat and found what looked like human remains in cardboard boxes. A forensic doctor confirmed the bones and decomposing body belonged to five newborns, and authorities opened a murder inquiry.
The discovery
On Monday, 27 July, the 32-year-old father, distressed after learning once again very late that his partner was pregnant, began searching their apartment in the historic centre of Orange, southeastern France. She had given birth at home the day before (Sunday, 26 July) to a healthy baby and was taken to hospital. According to Le Parisien, this was the third time she had denied being pregnant. The man found what appeared to be human remains stored in cardboard boxes. He alerted the hospital in Orange, which informed the public prosecutor.
Police search and forensic findings
Police searched the second-floor flat on Monday evening. A forensic pathologist dispatched to the scene determined that the discovery consisted of the bones of four infants and the decomposing body of a fifth newborn. An autopsy has been ordered for the decomposing body, and the bones will be sent for anthropological analysis. The prosecutor's office opened a murder investigation.

Family situation and child welfare
The mother, also 32, remains in hospital and has not yet been interviewed by investigators. Her partner told police he knew nothing about his partner's possible pregnancies and was released. The couple already has two children: some reports say they are aged 8 and 9, while Franceinfo and El País cite them as 8 and 12. They live on the second floor of an old building near the Orange theatre, and on Tuesday the flat's door was sealed with red tape. Child welfare services have been called to urgently assess those children's situation, and a provisional placement order has been issued for the newborn. A neighbour told AFP the mother would collect the children from school at lunchtime, and the father appeared to be away at work all day.

In pregnancy denial, the woman is alone in the world because she hides this pregnancy she does not want. I would even say there is no other outcome in pregnancy denial than infanticide. And this kind of psychic blindness is contagious. That is, very often it is hard to believe that the partner could have been unaware of anything. Yet that is often the case, I would say, the majority of cases.
Recent infanticide cases in France
France has seen several high-profile infanticide cases. In 2015, Dominique Cottrez was sentenced to nine years' imprisonment for killing eight newborns, with the court finding her judgment impaired. In 2018, a woman received an eight-year sentence for drowning five newborns and freezing their bodies. In March 2026, a 44-year-old woman was jailed for 25 years over the deaths of two newborns found in a freezer. The current case in Orange has drawn comparisons to these precedents.
