Newborn brought dead to Cecina hospital in a bag, prosecutors order autopsy
A couple brought a newborn who had already died to the emergency room in Cecina (Livorno) on the morning of Thursday, 15 October. Prosecutors ordered an autopsy to establish whether the baby died before or after birth.
Arrival at the emergency room
On the morning of Thursday, 15 October 2026, a couple arrived at the emergency department of the hospital in Cecina (Livorno) carrying a newborn inside a bag. The baby was reportedly already dead when it reached the hospital. Staff started the necessary procedures, but the on-duty doctor could only confirm the death. As foreseen in circumstances of this kind, the hospital informed the police, and officers from the Cecina police station carried out an inspection at the hospital and collected first information from staff and from the parents.
The mother's account
According to Il Tirreno, the mother, a woman of around thirty, told medical staff that she did not know she was pregnant. On the morning of 15 October she was at home with her partner when she began to feel unwell with abdominal pain. She believed the symptoms came from indigestion. While her partner was asleep, she went to the bathroom and gave birth there. The couple then drove to the emergency room with the newborn, who was no longer breathing. The mother was admitted for checks, and her condition is reportedly good.

Investigation and autopsy
The Livorno prosecutor's office opened an investigation, coordinated by public prosecutor Ezia Mancusi, who ordered an autopsy. The examination is meant to establish the cause of death and whether the child died before or after birth. Preliminary assessments put the baby's gestational age at between 30 and 32 weeks, a figure that the medical-legal checks still have to verify. Police and prosecutors are working to reconstruct the exact sequence of events. The body remains at Cecina hospital at the disposal of the judicial authority.
Open questions
Investigators have not yet established whether the baby was already dead before birth or died shortly after it. The sequence of events therefore rests on the first accounts given to hospital staff and police. The mother's statements that she did not know she was pregnant form part of that first version and will be weighed against the autopsy findings. The medical examination is the next step that can separate these two possibilities. Until it is complete, the investigation remains open.
