Zakopane sees August tourist peak with 18% more visitors than New Year's Eve
Zakopane and the Podhale region are experiencing their peak tourist weekend of the year, with visitor numbers up to 18% higher than last New Year's Eve and hotels at 100% occupancy, according to the Tatra Chamber of Commerce.
Record weekend crowds
Mid-August is traditionally the peak of the tourist season in the Tatra Mountains, and this year's weekend may set a new attendance record. Karol Wagner of the Tatra Chamber of Commerce (TIG) told PAP that visitor numbers are up to 18% higher than during the last New Year's Eve. Hotels, pensions and popular accommodations across the Podhale region are at 100% occupancy, with summer cottages and campsites that are closed in winter also fully booked. Wagner noted that the lodging supply in mid-August is significantly larger than in winter, which helps absorb the crowds, though every category is filled.
The summer season did not start well for the industry. Wagner said tourist traffic was only building up until mid-July, partly due to poor weather. A clear acceleration came from mid-July onward, and the region is now recording its highest occupancy of the entire season. Domestic tourists form the largest group, but foreign visitors from Arab countries and Western Europe are also present in significant numbers.
Prices stable despite demand
Despite very high demand, accommodation prices have not risen significantly. According to TIG data, the median price for a double room in a three-star hotel is currently 697 PLN, exactly the same as a year ago and 8% lower than the rate planned in July.
- Median 3-star double room (Aug 2026)
- 697 PLN
- Planned July rate
- 758 PLN
This indicates that our entrepreneurs were not entirely confident about the success of this weekend and lowered prices, which ultimately is a success for the consumer.
Trails and infrastructure under pressure
The Tatra National Park reports that queues have formed on trails equipped with chains, where visitors wait to ascend to summits. Affected routes include the summit dome of Giewont, Orla Perć, and the trail to Rysy, all of which see extended crossing times due to the lines.
Morskie Oko is drawing particularly large interest. All parking spaces, approximately 1,000 in total, at the car parks before the Morskie Oko trail were sold out for both Saturday and Sunday. Heavy traffic is also reported on Zakopane's roads, with local traffic jams forming on main access routes and around the most visited attractions. Queues are visible in the town centre as well, particularly on Krupówki street outside popular restaurants.
Regional products fair adds to draw
The 17th European Regional Products Fair is running from August 14 to 18 on Górna Równia Krupowa in Zakopane, adding another attraction for visitors already in town for the mountain trails.

- 17th European Regional Products Fair opens on Górna Równia Krupowa in Zakopane
- Peak weekend: occupancy at 100%, tourist numbers 18% above last New Year's Eve
- All ~1,000 Morskie Oko parking spaces sold out; queues on Giewont, Orla Perć and Rysy trails

Sunny weather over the weekend further encouraged Poles to head to the mountains, Wagner said, contributing to the surge in visitor numbers across the region.
