The fighter jets escorted the Russian plane until it moved away from the zone of direct Polish defence interest, after which the Polish aircraft returned safely to their base.

The intercepted aircraft was identified as a Russian Ilyushin Il-20, a specialised military platform equipped for electronic intelligence and imagery reconnaissance missions. Aircraft of this type are routinely deployed to gather intelligence along the borders of North Atlantic Treaty Organization member states. Standard interception procedures require air defence forces to scramble alert aircraft, locate the target, visually identify the airframe, and escort it to determine operational intent and preserve airspace safety. Military statements confirmed that the Russian reconnaissance plane remained within international airspace and did not violate sovereign Polish airspace at any point during the flight. Security analysts noted that such reconnaissance sorties form a recurring component of Kremlin hybrid warfare operations aimed at testing allied vigilance and radar coverage.

Defence ministry statements on Russian pressure

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced the interception in an official statement released on social media platform X on Tuesday evening. The defence minister sought to reassure the Polish public while placing the aerial encounter into the broader context of persistent pressure exerted by the Russian Federation.

On 13 March 2026, Polish fighters intercepted a Russian Il-20 flying through international airspace with its transponder switched off. Polish F-16 fighter jets scrambled on consecutive days on 8 April and 9 April 2026 to identify Russian aircraft of the same reconnaissance model. Air defence units carried out another intercept on 24 April 2026 when two Russian Su-30 combat jets entered the international corridor, followed by the interception of an Il-20M reconnaissance variant on 13 May 2026. Official military statements confirmed that none of the Russian aircraft tracked in these 2026 incidents crossed into sovereign Polish territorial airspace.
