Poland and Sweden scramble fighter jets during Russian missile strikes on Ukraine
Poland activated domestic and Swedish fighter aircraft on Wednesday morning to secure its airspace while Russian forces targeted central Ukraine with ballistic and cruise missiles.
Polish military activation
Polish military aviation launched preventive security flights inside domestic airspace on Wednesday morning after Russian long-range aircraft carried out a coordinated barrage against targets in central Ukraine. The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces issued a morning public warning as it triggered emergency protocols through the Air Operations Centre and Air Component Command. Command leadership deployed assigned fighter aircraft and brought ground-based air defence batteries along with radar reconnaissance installations to immediate operational readiness. Military officials stated that the defensive mission was designed specifically to protect Polish sovereign airspace, particularly in sectors adjacent to threatened border zones. The operation also incorporated fighter jets dispatched by the Royal Swedish Air Force, which flew joint security missions alongside Polish combat pilots.
Overnight missile strikes on Ukrainian cities
The Polish military deployment responded to a sequence of missile strikes detected across Ukrainian territory during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. Air raid sirens sounded in Kyiv and across a majority of Ukrainian regions following notifications concerning potential ballistic missile attacks. Explosions were recorded in both the capital city of Kyiv and the central city of Dnipro during the overnight hours. On Tuesday evening, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Russian military forces had scrambled Tu-160 strategic bombers from bases in the Irkutsk region. Ukrainian military authorities explained that the Russian military utilizes Tu-160 bombers to launch Kh-101 cruise missiles toward Ukrainian infrastructure targets.
In the event of cruise missile launches, they are expected to enter Ukrainian airspace approximately after 03:00.
Ukrainian military leadership urged citizens across all regions to observe air alerts strictly and remain in designated shelters. Earlier on Tuesday afternoon, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had stated that intelligence data indicated active preparations by the Russian military for a mass aerial bombardment.
Operations conclusion and airspace status
The aerial protection mission over Poland concluded around 06:30 on Wednesday morning after operating for roughly one and a half hours. Following the end of the patrol mission, the Operational Command confirmed that no foreign aerial objects entered or violated Polish sovereign airspace during the Russian strikes. Ground-based air defence units and radar reconnaissance networks stepped down from heightened readiness and returned to their standard operational activities. The Operational Command published a message of appreciation to the Swedish Air Force for supplying fighter aircraft to bolster air safety.
We inform that no violation of the airspace of the Republic of Poland was recorded.
Polish defence authorities stated that national forces will continue tracking the security situation on Ukrainian territory continuously. Command representatives affirmed that Polish military units and allied assets remain in constant readiness to protect national airspace if subsequent attacks approach the border.
