Poland expands free HPV vaccination to adults aged 18 to 26 until May 2027
A Ministry of Health decree taking effect on 1 October 2026 introduces three-dose HPV vaccinations for people aged 18 to 26, while expanding COVID-19 shots from 6 months of age and pertussis vaccines for pregnant women.
New eligibility for young adults
Poland's Ministry of Health has expanded state-funded access to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations to include adults aged 18 to 26. The policy took effect on 1 October 2026, following an official ministerial announcement published on 30 September 2026 regarding the list of recommended protective vaccinations covered by state financing. Under the published regulations, individuals who have completed 18 years of age up to the completion of 26 years of age are eligible to receive the vaccine free of charge. The public funding for this age bracket is scheduled to operate on a temporary basis until 31 May 2027. Following the expiration of this reimbursement period on 31 May 2027, patients within this age group will be required to pay for the immunization out of pocket.

- Reimbursement period concludes for the 18 to 26 age group
Public health background and dosage rules
The expanded vaccination initiative specifies a three-dose schedule for all eligible adults between 18 and 26 years of age. Medical descriptions accompanying the announcement define HPV as a common sexually transmitted pathogen that affects the vast majority of sexually active individuals during their lifetime. Chronic viral infection is a primary cause of cervical cancer, in addition to contributing to other oncological diseases. While younger age cohorts receive fewer doses, older recipients require the full three-dose sequence to ensure adequate immunization against the pathogen. Eligible individuals can receive all three required doses under state funding as long as they initiate and complete the process within the designated reimbursement window.

Revisions to COVID-19 and pertussis immunization
Alongside HPV provisions, the ministerial announcement of 30 September 2026 updated reimbursement guidelines for two other infectious diseases, namely COVID-19 and pertussis, or whooping cough. State-funded vaccination against COVID-19 has been broadened to cover individuals starting from 6 months of age. For pertussis, free vaccinations have been officially extended to pregnant women, with recommended administration between the 27th and 36th weeks of pregnancy. The regulations also specify that in medically justified situations involving a risk of premature birth, pregnant women are entitled to receive the state-funded pertussis vaccine earlier, after completing the 20th week of pregnancy. These modifications extend public health protection to infants and expecting mothers.
Evolution of state vaccine financing
Prior to the October 2026 update, state financing for HPV, COVID-19, and pertussis vaccinations was concentrated on children between 9 and 14 years old. The universal HPV vaccination program originally launched on 1 September 2024, providing free vaccines to children after completing their 9th year up to their 14th year. For that adolescent group, the immunization follows a two-dose schedule, which continues to operate as an established public health measure. Previously, state procurement for COVID-19 and whooping cough shots was also linked to this same 9 to 14 age bracket. The eight-month funding window running from 1 October 2026 until 31 May 2027 gives adults aged 18 to 26 the opportunity to obtain free HPV protection before full commercial pricing returns.
