Pentagon postpones defense talks with Poland as Polish deputy ministers travel to Washington

Postponement of Washington talks

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz will not travel to Washington for his scheduled Wednesday meeting at the Pentagon. The Polish Ministry of National Defence announced on Monday evening, 21 September 2026, that the bilateral session with United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth was postponed following an urgent request from American officials. The Pentagon press office confirmed that the session was cancelled because of a scheduling conflict and will be rescheduled for a future date. Officials from both ministries are working to determine a new date for the ministerial meeting.

Deputy ministers lead working delegation

Instead of the ministerial visit, the Polish defense ministry dispatched Deputy Ministers Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka and Paweł Zalewski to Washington. Their mandate includes meeting with American counterparts to advance ongoing negotiations and prepare subsequent bilateral cooperation agreements. The ministry statement explained that urgent action regarding the security of NATO member states became necessary following communications from Washington and the recent meeting of allied defense chiefs. That meeting was the annual NATO Military Committee Conference, held in Copenhagen late last week, which brought together the military chiefs of all 32 NATO member states, including the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, General Wiesław Kukuła.

Patriot missile servicing and deliveries

The ministerial agenda, which Kosiniak-Kamysz previewed on 15 September 2026, centered on Polish national security, delivery schedules, and the establishment of a PAC-3 missile maintenance facility in Poland. Deputy Minister Sobkowiak-Czarnecka stated in an interview that the Polish delegation will address delivery backlogs with American partners.

The United States is not able to ensure sufficient production of missiles for the Patriot system for its own needs, let alone for the needs of allies. In the US, we will talk about delayed deliveries and how to speed up these deliveries to Poland.

Sobkowiak-Czarnecka noted that no Patriot interceptors are currently manufactured in Europe, adding that Poland seeks to move from maintenance to industrial coproduction.

Patriot missiles are not produced anywhere in Europe. Today, the United States itself is falling victim to its own policy, because it cannot produce enough for its own needs. We in Poland are ready for co-production. We submitted an official application to the American side regarding the establishment of a service center for Patriot missiles in Poland.

She added that establishing a regional service center represents the first practical step toward domestic production of the interceptors.

Defense cooperation framework

The bilateral Pentagon session had been planned over several weeks, following an initial agreement reached by Kosiniak-Kamysz and Hegseth at the NATO summit in Ankara in July 2026. The talks follow recent financing arrangements between Poland and the United States under the Foreign Military Financing program, a State Department mechanism designed to help allied nations purchase American military hardware. Kosiniak-Kamysz previously characterized the Foreign Military Financing framework as an American counterpart to the European SAFE initiative. While working-level negotiations in Washington proceed under Sobkowiak-Czarnecka and Zalewski, officials in Warsaw and Washington are coordinating a revised schedule for Kosiniak-Kamysz to travel to the Pentagon.
