Discovery of the victim in Palavas-les-Flots

On the morning of 9 September 2026, emergency services and gendarmes were summoned to a residential street in the Mediterranean resort town of Palavas-les-Flots, located south of Montpellier in the Hérault department. The initial alert was triggered at approximately 10:15 after a resident discovered blood traces across a parking area near a residential complex. Firefighters and gendarmerie personnel traced the bloodstains to a first-floor apartment on Rue du Ponant, near Avenue du Général-de-Gaulle and a short walk from the seafront. Inside the accommodation, which was rented via the short-term rental platform Airbnb, officers discovered the lifeless body of a man who had suffered multiple wounds inflicted by a bladed weapon. The victim remained unidentified in the immediate hours following the discovery. Gendarmes established a security cordon around the building to preserve forensic evidence.

Suspect escape and emergency response

Preliminary findings revealed that the assailant fled the scene immediately after the violent assault. According to details shared by police sources, the suspect jumped from the first-floor apartment window to make an escape. The drop caused physical damage to a vehicle parked directly below, which was owned by the witness who later spotted the blood traces and alerted authorities. The suspect fled into the surrounding streets before police arrived on the scene. While local media outlet Métropolitain reported that a double homicide had occurred inside the flat, other reports confirmed only one deceased male at the scene.

Manhunt and specialized police deployment

The Montpellier research section assumed leadership of the criminal inquiry, with investigators treating the death as an intentional homicide. Law enforcement deployed substantial resources across the resort town, including gendarmes from Lunel, local research brigades, and forensic specialists from the National Gendarmerie Criminal Research Institute (IRCGN). A canine unit featuring a tracking dog was brought in from Nîmes in the neighbouring Gard department to scour surrounding residential blocks for scent trails.
