The Panama Canal Authority announced that it will gradually reduce the number of bookable vessel passages starting in September. The canal operates via a system of locks that discharges fresh water into the sea with each transit. Despite the ongoing rainy season and existing conservation measures, canal administrators determined that additional preventative limits on ship traffic are necessary to preserve water reserves.
