Oxford United withdraws clothing line featuring 'United 93' slogan and issues apology

Immediate withdrawal of merchandise

English League One club Oxford United apologised on Friday after launching an apparel line featuring the slogan "United 93". The merchandise, part of an American sports-styled release called the Campus Collection, displayed the phrase across clothing items including an American football jersey and a baseball top. The club deleted the sales webpage within two hours of its Friday morning launch, removing the products from sale by lunchtime following public recognition of the phrase.

Oxford United acknowledged that the products should never have reached retail channels and confirmed an internal review of its merchandising sign-off procedures.

The range was released without understanding of the historical context and associations. It should not have reached the point of sale and we take full responsibility for not undertaking proper due diligence.

Founding year versus airline call sign

The clothing design was created as a reference to Oxford United's founding year of 1893, when the team was originally established as an amateur side named Headington FC before adopting its current name in 1960. The club also earned promotion to the Second Division in 1993. However, United 93 was the call sign of United Airlines Flight 93, one of four commercial airliners hijacked by al-Qaeda militants during the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001.

Flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all 44 passengers and crew on board after people on the aircraft stormed the cockpit to stop hijackers from reaching Washington, DC. The attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania killed 2,977 people in total. The passenger resistance on Flight 93 was chronicled in the 2006 docudrama film titled "United 93".

Launch timing and internal review

The merchandise appeared online one week after the 25th anniversary of the 2001 attacks. The club had initially considered releasing the collection on 9 September to match the start of the NFL season in the United States, before postponing the release due to concerns regarding proximity to the anniversary. A club source indicated that staff involved in the product design were aware of the anniversary date but were too young to recognise the specific significance of Flight 93.

In its formal statement, the third-tier club apologised for causing offence and noted that steps are underway to prevent similar oversights in the future.

The rapid withdrawal prompted debate across social media and club forums. Commentators online noted the availability of publicly known information, pointing to the widely released 2006 feature film as a prominent cultural reference.
