The capital's local government declared that it refuses to let schoolchildren in classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds serve as background figures in large-scale data collection programs operated by corporate entities like Meta. The prohibition applies equally during classroom instruction and outdoor recess across all municipal educational facilities.

Beyond taking photographs, capturing video footage, making phone calls, and streaming audio, the hardware links wearers directly to conversational artificial intelligence assistants. The devices connect to the internet to process data and interact with remote digital services. Reports indicate that Meta has developed facial recognition capabilities ready for integration into its smart glasses, increasing concerns over biometric tracking and covert photography in academic environments.

Political friction with national government

The city's swift prohibition created a clear divergence between Oslo's municipal administration and Norway's national left-wing government. While central government ministries established an advisory expert group to examine potential regulations on smart glasses and facial recognition software in public venues, Oslo's local leadership enacted an immediate ban. Midtgarden, representing the Conservative party, argued that setting up exploratory committees fails to address the immediate reality confronting educators and pupils.
