Noah Okafor steps down from Swiss national team after dispute with manager Murat Yakin

On 10 September 2026, Leeds United forward Noah Okafor announced that he will not play for the Switzerland national team as long as head coach Murat Yakin remains in charge. The 26-year-old player, who has earned 26 caps and scored two goals for Switzerland, explained on Instagram that a breakdown in mutual trust prompted his decision. During the 2026 World Cup in North America, where Switzerland reached the quarter-finals before losing 3-1 after extra time to Argentina, Okafor received only 19 minutes of playing time as a substitute against Algeria in the round of 32. He was left on the bench during a group stage match against Canada after an opponent goal made the score 2-1, despite earlier discussions regarding his participation. Frustrations escalated during the Algeria game when Yakin threw a water bottle after Okafor lost possession near the sideline.

Longstanding friction across previous campaigns

The rift between Okafor and the Swiss coaching staff developed across multiple international windows. Prior to Euro 2024, Okafor arrived late to the national training camp in St. Gallen because of promotional obligations with AC Milan in Australia, subsequently sitting on the bench for friendlies against Estonia and Austria. He did not play a single minute during the tournament in Germany, after which his father and brothers met with national team director Pierluigi Tami at a restaurant in Zurich to complain about the lack of playing time. In August 2024, Yakin publicly criticized Okafor's training attitude and commitment. The forward was omitted from the squad for the entirety of 2025, sitting out all World Cup qualifiers. After Okafor criticized Yakin's communication in an interview with The Athletic in November, Yakin and communications director Adrian Arnold traveled to Leeds for talks, leading to Okafor's return to the squad in March 2026.

Pre-emptive announcement and upcoming fixtures

Okafor made his decision public one day after reports indicated that individuals in his inner circle had published posts criticizing Yakin and the Swiss Football Association on social media platforms. According to those reports, Yakin had already informed team leaders, including captain Granit Xhaka, that Okafor would no longer be selected for future camps. In his statement, Okafor maintained that his withdrawal was not motivated solely by a lack of pitch time.

Murat Yakin does a great job and achieved historical success with Switzerland. Success proves him and his work right. And of course I do not want special treatment from him. Only mutual respect and trust, but I do not see this foundation for the coming years.

The Swiss Football Association acknowledged the forward's statement, confirming that he will no longer be considered for selection for the time being. The Swiss national team next gathers for UEFA Nations League fixtures on 26 September against North Macedonia and on 29 September against Scotland.
