Funeral for Nolan Wells as Rev. Al Sharpton offers $100,000 reward and demands answers
Family and supporters gathered in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, on Monday to mourn Nolan Xavier Wells, 18, two weeks after his body was found on Horn Island, as Rev. Al Sharpton offered a $100,000 reward and actor Tyler Perry helped fund the funeral.
A mother's tribute
Hundreds packed Center Pointe Church, many wearing sky blue at the request of Christine Wonsley, remembering her son's high school football colors. Childhood photos flickered across screens during visitation, and framed jerseys lined the aisle beside a casket draped in blue and white flowers.
He had a way of making people feel seen, welcomed and valued. He could lift your confidence with just a few words and make you feel like you belong.
Wonsley, wearing a pin bearing Nolan's image, asked mourners to keep his memory alive. His father, Elmore Wonsley, said the turnout showed how much Nolan meant to the community, the country and the world. Both parents described their son as a gentle presence, a role model to his younger siblings and a gifted athlete with NFL dreams.
Sharpton's call for answers and a $100,000 reward
Rev. Al Sharpton officiated the service and announced the reward (half covered by Tyler Perry, who also paid for the funeral). He challenged the Jackson County Sheriff's early suggestion that no foul play was involved.
There's too many unanswered questions. We can't have someone in law enforcement saying there was no foul play before there was an investigation.
Invoking Mississippi's history of racist violence, including the lynching of Emmett Till and assassination of Medgar Evers, Sharpton said the nation's attention on the case is rooted in that legacy.

The events at Horn Island
Wells traveled to Horn Island on 4 July with a group of white high school friends. He did not return with them that evening. His body was found on the island's shore on 6 July. Sheriff John Ledbetter said initial interviews indicated Wells chose to stay and that his friends believed he would get a ride with someone else. The friends are cooperating with investigators, and the FBI has joined the case. Autopsy reports from both the state and the family's investigation have not been released. Sharpton questioned why Wells' phone and keys were found with the friends and why local officials were quick to dismiss foul play.

Notable attendees and community pressure

The still-unknown circumstances surrounding Wells' disappearance have fueled online speculation and galvanized Black leaders, some of whom have expressed skepticism about the independence of the investigation. Sharpton urged the crowd to withhold judgment until more facts emerge, but insisted on a full and thorough probe.
What comes next
"We want to celebrate Nolan and at the same time say we want a full and thorough investigation," Sharpton said, adding that closure for the family will only come with justice. The reward stands. The investigation continues.
