Polish lawmaker Michał Moskal suspended his membership in the Law and Justice (PiS) parliamentary club on 25 September 2026, following media reports concerning the Zondacrypto lobbying controversy. The decision followed a direct discussion between Moskal, who represents the Lublin electoral district, and party chairman Jarosław Kaczyński. Moskal previously served as a close aide to Kaczyński before entering parliament. In a statement on social platform X, Moskal denied receiving funds from Zondacrypto, calling the reports an attack connected to the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He also asked when Polish state regulators learned about issues surrounding Zondacrypto, suggesting potential foreign intelligence activity.

In connection with the unprecedented and insinuating attack aimed at Law and Justice and at me regarding the Donald Tusk government's Zondacrypto affair, after speaking with Chairman Jarosław Kaczyński, out of a sense of responsibility, I decided to suspend my membership in the Law and Justice Parliamentary Club until party leadership receives full information on all circumstances of this case.

The Ibiza meeting and amendment drafting

The controversy centres on legislative proposals prepared during parliamentary work on the crypto-assets market act. Reporting by news outlet Onet stated that Moskal travelled to Ibiza to meet Zondacrypto chief executive Przemysław Kral, with intermediary Artur Chodziński facilitating contact. Draft amendments were allegedly forwarded through Chodziński to Kral, who reviewed the text before committee proceedings and suggested industry-friendly changes. Moskal rejected the allegations, stating he met Kral only once, possessed no contact details for him, and only consulted colleagues at a foundation where he is active. He maintained that the amendments were authored solely by Janusz Kowalski and submitted without modification.

Internal party rift and Kowalski's response

The reporting caused an immediate rift between Moskal and Janusz Kowalski, the non-affiliated lawmaker who drafted the provisions for PiS. Although Kowalski stated in August that Moskal had not pressured him regarding the bill, he denounced Moskal following Friday's disclosures. Kowalski expressed disbelief that drafts prepared on behalf of PiS were shared with individuals working for Kral. He accused Moskal of acting without party knowledge and urged him to resign from the club entirely, stating that Moskal had deceived everyone in PiS by passing the text to Chodziński.

Government reaction and parliamentary discipline

Government figures criticized the opposition following the report, framing the case as improper lobbying. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński mocked Moskal for blaming the government and foreign services for his suspension, while government spokesperson Adam Szłapka published a four-point summary describing the alleged coordination. PiS disciplinary spokesperson Karol Karski stated on television that Moskal proposed his own suspension while party leaders await written explanations. Karski noted that the amendments in question were submitted in their original draft form and never entered into legal force.
