Metallica launches 24-show Life Burns Faster residency at Las Vegas Sphere
The band kicked off its 24-show Life Burns Faster residency on October 1, 2026, performing rare setlist selections across the venue's 160,000-square-foot screen.
Residency launch and format
Metallica opened their 24-show Life Burns Faster residency on October 1, 2026, at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The engagement runs on paired Thursdays and Saturdays through March 13, 2027. The band applies its No Repeat Weekend format, first introduced during the 2023 M72 World Tour, ensuring that each two-night stand features completely different setlists with zero duplicated songs. Lars Ulrich noted that watching U2 inaugurate the venue in September 2023 inspired the group to build their own custom production for the domed space.
About 12 seconds into the opening night of Sphere with U2 back in '23, I thought 'We have to do this, it's completely uncharted territory!'
Staging and visual production
The production utilized the venue's 160,000-square-foot, 16K resolution interior LED screen, which extends 240 feet into the air. Following AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" and "The Ecstasy of Gold" at 8:48 p.m., the band opened with "Battery", marking the first time the song opened a concert since 2014. An undulating stage wrapped around the central Snake Pit area with nine distinct microphone positions, allowing James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo to roam while Ulrich's drum kit surfaced in multiple locations. Visuals evolved from live audience camera feeds into dark environments, including a Gothic cathedral with stained-glass windows for "Sad but True", card and slot machine graphics for "The Shortest Straw", and a Lovecraftian Cthulhu depiction during "The Call of Ktulu". Hetfield reflected on the technical setup directly from the stage.
For modern technology and old guys playing loud music, I have to say this is pretty awesome.
Setlist rarities and album artwork
The opening set spanned the group's recording history, ranging from their 1983 debut Kill 'Em All to their 2023 album 72 Seasons. Sources reported differing total song counts for the performance, citing either 15 or 18 tracks. The band revived "...And Justice for All", which had not been performed live since 2014, accompanied by animations of the Lady Justice statue inside a cylindrical prison with neon green paint splatters. "Now That We're Dead" returned to the live repertoire for the first time since 2021. For "Ride the Lightning", visuals rendered an electric chair motif inspired by Stephen King's novel The Stand, projecting a simulated electrode cap directly over the audience alongside performances of "Creeping Death", "The Memory Remains", "Nothing Else Matters", and "Master of Puppets".
Venue scale and touring schedule
Sphere incorporates 164,000 audio speakers, atmospheric sensory systems, and an exterior facade illuminated by 57 million programmable LEDs, holding a total capacity of 20,000 spectators with 18,600 seated places. Metallica follows previous headliners at the arena, including U2, Eagles, Backstreet Boys, No Doubt, and Kenny Chesney. Following the conclusion of their Las Vegas residency dates in March 2027, the band will resume the M72 World Tour with 12 additional North American stadium concerts, starting on May 8, 2027, in Vancouver and running through June 19, 2027, in Salt Lake City.
