Enric Mas defends Vuelta lead over Primož Roglič as Eddie Dunbar takes Stage 19
Enric Mas retained his 1:37 general classification lead over Primož Roglič on Stage 19 of the Vuelta a España, while Ireland's Eddie Dunbar won the summit finish at Peñas Blancas.
Dunbar secures Stage 19 victory
Edward Dunbar won Stage 19 of the 2026 Vuelta a España after overtaking Santiago Buitrago on the final ascent to Peñas Blancas near Estepona. The 210.8-kilometer stage began in Vélez-Málaga and tested riders with roughly 4,000 meters of climbing, including a passage over the Puerto del Viento. The peloton maintained a fast pace from the start and neutralized early attacks for much of the day. A 16-rider breakaway eventually formed late in the stage and established a gap of several minutes over the main field. On the 18.7-kilometer finishing climb, Buitrago attacked from the lead group, initially taking Dunbar and two other competitors with him. The Colombian launched a second acceleration to pull clear, but Dunbar caught and passed him inside the final kilometer to claim his third career Vuelta stage win for Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling, leaving Buitrago in second place.
General classification contenders finish together
Enric Mas defended his overall race lead and the red jersey by matching the moves of his closest rivals on the climb to Peñas Blancas. Primož Roglič, a four-time winner of the Vuelta, launched an attack two kilometers from the finish line, but the 31-year-old Spanish leader marked the acceleration directly. Earlier on the ascent, Roglič's team had moved to the front of the favorites group to set the tempo, but they did not maintain a high speed and subsequently pulled off. The top five riders in the general classification crossed the summit together, finishing 5:11 behind Dunbar. The result left the overall standings unchanged at the top, with Mas holding a 1:37 lead over Roglič and Austrian rider Felix Gall retaining third place with a 3:01 deficit.

Standings ahead of the weekend
The 2026 edition of the Spanish Grand Tour runs from 22 August to 13 September, covering 21 stages across Monaco, France, Andorra, and Spain. Roglič had previously gained 33 seconds on Mas during Thursday's Stage 18 individual time trial, a performance that moved the Slovenian ahead of Gall into second place. However, Roglič was unable to make further inroads into Mas's advantage during Friday's opening mountain test. Mas maintained his position at the head of the race, leaving the general classification gap at 97 seconds heading into the final competitive stages.

The penultimate day of racing on Saturday, 12 September, presents the race's queen stage over 186.8 kilometers between La Calahorra and Collado del Alguacil. Classified as a pure mountain stage, the route features 4,850 meters of total vertical gain and includes three categorized first-category ascents. The stage concludes with a summit finish at Collado del Alguacil, a climb categorized in the highest category that measures 8.3 kilometers with an average gradient of 9.8%. The stage offers Roglič his final realistic opportunity to challenge Mas's lead before the three-week race concludes on Sunday with Stage 21 in Granada.
