Lula warns against foreign interference in Latin America

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly on 22 September 2026, rejecting foreign influence across Latin America and warning against renewed hegemonic ambitions. Speaking as the first head of state at the general debate, Lula stated that geographical proximity to the United States remains inescapable, but insisted that regional nations must retain autonomy over their resources and political processes. Trump threatens military action and targets cartels

US President Donald Trump addressed the assembly on Tuesday afternoon, asserting that Washington will deploy armed forces in Latin America whenever it determines that American interests face a threat. Trump cited the 3 January 2026 military operation in Caracas that removed Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro from power. Maduro remains imprisoned in New York facing federal drug trafficking charges. Trump told delegates that hundreds of political prisoners have since left detention in Venezuela, while the United States prepared to control a share of Venezuelan petroleum reserves under a recent arrangement.

“The United States will no longer allow threats against the country to take hold anywhere in the American continent. And, if necessary, we will use our unmatched military power to protect the national interests of the United States.”

Trump also demanded wider anti-narcotics action from Mexico, which has chosen not to join Washington's regional security pact. He compared Latin American drug cartels to the Islamic State, arguing that cartel operatives should be eliminated, exiled, or held indefinitely as enemy combatants. Trump also defended recent airstrikes against vessels suspected of carrying narcotics in the Caribbean Sea.

Upcoming elections and bilateral tensions

The diplomatic confrontation occurs twelve days before Brazil's general election on 4 October 2026, where Lula seeks re-election against senator Flavio Bolsonaro. The Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) raised its assessment of possible US electoral interference to a critical level. Bilateral friction has also intensified following punitive tariffs imposed by Washington on Brazilian exports, trade penalties that also targeted Canada and European Union member states. Lula stated that certain domestic political actors have partnered with external interests to deploy disinformation campaigns, but affirmed that the nation's electronic voting system remains secure.

Lula condemned the military campaign conducted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in Gaza, defended UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, and criticized economic sanctions affecting 10 million residents in Cuba.
