Delcroix leads Lugano with rare defensive hat-trick

Lugano secured a 4-0 victory away against Lausanne at the Stade de la Tuilière during the ninth round of the Swiss Super League. The result gave the league leaders their eighth victory in nine matches, lifting head coach Mattia Croci-Torti's side to 25 points at the top of the table. Lugano center-back Hannes Delcroix, a 27-year-old Haitian international and World Cup participant whose primary duty is preventing goals, proved decisive in attack by scoring three times. After an opening half-hour with few clear chances, Lugano established complete control of the match. The contest shifted definitively in the 50th minute when Lausanne midfielder Sékou Koné was dismissed. The 20-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, caught Grgic on the upper thigh with his studs, prompting referee Urs Schnyder to issue a straight red card directly in front of the play. Lugano capitalized on the free kick and the numerical advantage two minutes later in the 52nd minute. Azerbaijani international and World Cup participant Bekhruz Karimov beat his defender on the right flank before delivering a cross to the head of Delcroix, who completed his hat-trick to make the score 3-0. Lausanne conceded again in the 61st minute when substitute Mattia Zanotti sent a cross into the box that Lausanne defender Abdou Karim Sow inadvertently deflected past Mastil into his own net. The outcome prolonged Lausanne's winless streak to eight matches (five losses and three draws), leaving the team at the bottom of the table under head coach Luka Elsner and sporting director Stéphane Henchoz.

Lugano enters the three-week international break holding a six-point lead over both second-placed Young Boys and third-placed Sion, who each sit on 19 points. Lugano will resume league play on Saturday, 10 October, when they host FC Luzern in a fixture broadcast live on SRF zwei. In other Sunday matches across the league, defending champions Thun ended a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 away victory against Vaduz in the Principality. Gian-Luca Privitelli's side survived a 28th-minute shot against the crossbar before establishing a lead through goals from Furkan Dursun in the 33rd minute and Nils Reichmuth in the 50th minute. Vaduz pulled one goal back in the 73rd minute when Marcel Monsberger converted a cross from Lutfi Dalipi, but Milos Cocic missed an open goal in the 90th minute to seal Thun's win. In Basel, St. Gallen claimed an away victory in the day's final fixture.
