Lucy Davis, star of UK 'The Office,' reveals Stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis

Diagnosis and announcement

Lucy Davis revealed on Tuesday, August 11, in an Instagram post that she was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer a year and a half ago, roughly early 2025. The cancer has metastasized to her bones, specifically her spine, right hip, and ribs. She described the cancer as "incurable, and too late for chemo."

The initial symptom was deceptively small. Davis said the lump she felt was not a traditional lump but "a kind of hard spot. Really tiny." She nearly did not see a doctor about it, and urged her followers not to ignore unusual signs. She wrote: "don't ignore anything, get everything checked out."

Living with the diagnosis

Despite the terminal diagnosis, Davis said she is determined to live her remaining time as fully as possible. She wrote that she is "trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can," adding that she looks for teachable moments in negative experiences and has learned a lot from cancer.

Davis asked friends and family to keep teasing her and to avoid treating her as a sick person. She also disclosed that pain can be unbearable at times and that she sometimes needs a wheelchair, joking that if people see her out, they should not hesitate to give her a push.

She also wrote that leaving her physical body means "going home" and that she would see her "Gracie sooner than expected."

Career and activism

Davis confirmed she intends to continue acting, calling it "one of the biggest joys in my life" and saying she is "perfectly able to do so." She also pledged to continue her animal rights work, which she described as deeply important to her. Davis is a longtime vegan and activist against fur and circuses.

Her career spans dozens of shows and films. Beyond "The Office," which ran from 2001 to 2003 on the BBC and was created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, Davis has appeared in "Shaun of the Dead," "Wonder Woman," "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip," and BBC Radio 4's "The Archers." The US version of "The Office," which debuted on NBC in 2005, was inspired by the British original.

Family and industry support

Davis's father, comedian Jasper Carrott (real name Robert Davis), told BBC News that the family is going through a difficult time and has been supporting her since the diagnosis.

Fischer herself revealed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer and was now cancer-free after surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Other messages came from Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto, her co-stars from "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," Melissa Joan Hart, Sarah Paulson, and Piers Morgan, who called the news "devastating" and praised her courage in speaking honestly.
