Llorente strikes early at Anfield

Atlético Madrid opened their Champions League group stage campaign at Anfield on Wednesday night, taking the lead in the 17th minute. Julián Alvarez, making his first start of the season after Diego Simeone reversed his pre-match stance on his match fitness, dropped deep to deliver a through pass to Marcos Llorente. Llorente beat left-back Milos Kerkez and drove a left-footed finish past Alisson Becker. The strike marked Llorente's fifth career Champions League goal at Anfield across three appearances, taking his total in the competition to 10 goals in 59 matches. Alvarez followed up with a long-range strike shortly after, but Alisson turned the ball away to deny a second goal.

Liverpool overturn deficit through Szoboszlai and Mac Allister

Under manager Andoni Iraola, Liverpool increased their attacking tempo and exploited transitional opportunities. In the 40th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai capitalised on a possession turnover from Kang-In Lee, surging into the penalty box before finishing a heel pass from Ronald Araujo. Five minutes after the second-half restart, Liverpool took the lead when Alexis Mac Allister collected a pass from Alexander Isak and sent a left-footed strike from outside the box into Jan Oblak's net. The home side sustained pressure through wingers Bradley Barcola and Rio Ngumoha, while Oblak prevented further concessions by stopping early chances from Isak and Florian Wirtz.

Tactical adjustments and second-half stalemate

Facing a 2-1 deficit, Simeone altered his setup in the 59th minute by introducing Ademola Lookman and Alejandro Grimaldo for Koke and Kang-In Lee. Iraola responded one minute later with a double change, replacing Barcola and Ngumoha with Jeremie Frimpong and Victor Munoz. Simeone subsequently brought on striker Jonathan David in the 73rd minute for Alex Baena, followed by Morten Hjulmand and Robin Le Normand in the 77th minute. Despite the attacking substitutions, Atlético Madrid struggled to create clear opportunities against Liverpool central defenders Virgil van Dijk and Jeremy Jacquet. Referee Davide Massa issued two yellow cards during the match, booking Mac Allister for Liverpool and Marc Pubill for Atlético.

Defensive concerns mount for Atlético

The result marked Atlético Madrid's second consecutive defeat in all competitions after losing 3-0 against Athletic Club in Bilbao. Speaking in the press room at Anfield, Simeone discussed his team's recurring defensive problems across recent fixtures.

They are scoring many goals against us, three in Bilbao, one in Sevilla, Villarreal scored two and today Liverpool another two. That comes down to the team, we have to work, even though we are under construction whether some like to hear it or not.

Simeone also praised the contribution of Alvarez, who played the entire match in attack.
