Drones over German military base housing Patriot systems after explosive drone found at Leipzig airport

Two drones were detected over the Bundeswehr's Materiallager Mechernich in North Rhine-Westphalia on Thursday, August 6, around 22:00, the military's operational command confirmed on Saturday. The base, about 35 kilometers from the Belgian border and southwest of Bonn, houses a protected underground depot at 130 meters depth covering approximately 30,000 square meters for storing military equipment and spare parts. According to German media reports by Süddeutsche Zeitung, WDR and NDR, private security employees observed six overflights between 22:00 on Thursday and 05:00 on Friday. The Bundeswehr confirmed two drones, a figure that does not necessarily contradict the six overflights since the same machine could have appeared multiple times. Bundeswehr gendarmes observed one drone from a distance of about 40 meters, and according to a confidential report, one machine circled briefly over officers already on site.

The Patriot repair facility

The Mechernich facility houses specialists responsible for maintaining and repairing US-made Patriot air defense systems. The installation, known within the Bundeswehr as "Patriot-Werft," is probably the only one of its kind in Europe. Germany is among the NATO members supplying Patriot systems to Ukraine for defense against Russian ballistic missile attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington the previous week to seek Patriot missiles from Donald Trump.

Military police investigated the Mechernich incident and transferred the case to civilian police in Euskirchen. Multiple agencies are now involved: the State Criminal Office of North Rhine-Westphalia, federal security services, military counterintelligence MAD, and the Joint Drone Defense Center. According to media reports, one of the drones may have been a Fly-380 VTOL type, with a wingspan of about 3.8 meters, a range of up to 400 kilometers, a speed of up to 150 km/h, and capable of carrying over 10 kilograms of payload. The identification has not been confirmed, and it remains unknown who is responsible for the overflights or what their purpose was.

Leipzig airport drone

The Mechernich sighting came two days after a drone carrying explosives was discovered at Leipzig-Halle airport on the night of Tuesday, August 4. The device was found near a Ukrainian Antonov Airlines An-124 "Ruslan" cargo plane in a restricted area. A bus driver on the airport runway spotted the drone flying low to the ground and neutralized it with a kick, unaware that it carried explosives. The improvised bomb was powerful enough to destroy an aircraft. RFI reported the plane was loaded with ammunition, while Rzeczpospolita reported that this information was denied.

Due to the runway closure, a cargo plane approaching the airport had to abort its landing and collided with a smaller unidentified flying object, possibly a second drone. The Federal Prosecutor's Office took over the investigation on Thursday. Leipzig-Halle serves as a civil cargo hub and NATO logistics center used for transporting military aid to Ukraine, and also hosts the Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS).

Government response

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt interrupted his vacation and described the Leipzig incident as a "hybrid attack" and a "new dimension of threat." He did not rule out the involvement of "foreign powers" but named no country. Some lawmakers pointed to Russia, though German authorities have not publicly accused any nation.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz convened a national security council on Friday, August 7. The Russian Embassy in Berlin called the discovery of the drone with explosives at Leipzig a "fabricated provocation" and spoke of "a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria," claiming the hybrid attacks Germany describes are invented to provoke Russia. Germany has taken concrete steps on drone defense since 2025, including new legislation, specialized units, and technical systems. Federal and state authorities established the Joint Drone Defense Center (GDAZ), and a new federal police unit for drone defense was introduced.
