Elena Lasconi warns President Nicușor Dan: 'You could be Romania's first impeached president'
Former USR leader and mayor Elena Lasconi issued a sharp public warning to President Nicușor Dan on Saturday, accusing him of refusing to take responsibility for his decisions and predicting his impeachment if he does not change course.
A public ultimatum
On 20 June 2026, Elena Lasconi, the former leader of the Save Romania Union (USR) and current mayor of Câmpulung, published a blistering Facebook post addressed to President Nicușor Dan. She demanded that he appear before the Romanian people and admit his mistakes, framing the current political moment as a decisive test of character.

Lasconi, who was a presidential candidate in the 2024 and 2025 elections, argued that Romanians are willing to forgive a leader who shows honesty, but that Dan has so far demonstrated none of those qualities.
Accusations of evasion
Much of the post centred on what Lasconi called the president's persistent refusal to accept blame. She claimed Dan habitually points fingers at others and shifts responsibility onto other people and institutions rather than owning his decisions.

Lasconi also offered her view of the presidency, contrasting Dan's conduct with the virtues she considers essential for the office. She said the presidential palace does not require mathematical talent but moral fortitude, citing dignity, empathy, diplomacy and honesty as the true prerequisites.

She further criticised the president for isolating himself from ordinary citizens, accusing him of spending too much time abroad accompanied by the protection service rather than staying connected with the people.
A literary closing
In a sarcastic finale, Lasconi invoked the Romanian writer Ion Creangă, suggesting that Dan is in danger of becoming a storybook character, one whose moral standing will depend entirely on his own actions. She also wished him good health, noting that troubles were piling up, and concluded that the ideal of an honest Romania, championed by the president himself, was now under severe strain.
