Historical framework across three eras
The script draws inspiration from Federico García Lorca's unfinished work of the same title while adapting Alberto Conejero's theatrical piece La piedra oscura. The narrative connects three distinct time periods, set in 1932, 1937, and 2017, focusing on three gay male protagonists. Miguel Bernardeau portrays Rafael Rodríguez Rapún, an engineering student, secretary of the La Barraca student theatre troupe, and Atlético de Madrid football player who was Lorca's partner. The historical Rapún died from combat wounds on 18 August 1937, exactly one year after Lorca was executed by firing squad on 18 August 1936. To prepare for battlefield scenes featuring roughly 100 background actors, Bernardeau completed three days of weapons training with military personnel.
Reception and cast reactions
Appearing on the TVE broadcast Al cielo con ella with host Henar Álvarez, Bernardeau discussed visiting a commercial cinema in disguise wearing a cap, glasses, and a hood to observe audience reactions firsthand. While he witnessed audiences applauding at the conclusion of screenings, he also noted receiving hostile political messages on social media, including extreme slogans, which he dismissed as too exaggerated to affect him. Bernardeau recalled shooting his final scene, which dramatised a dialogue between Lorca and Rapún centered on the line asking who would defend the poet from his companion's beauty.
They will kill me for saying this, but I felt like I was with Federico García Lorca at a table, and it is a magical moment.
Bernardeau explained that the project connected with younger audiences through its direct engagement with historical memory and anti-war themes.
I feel the film has an echo in us. Young people go to the cinema, it speaks of Federico, features three gay lead characters, is anti-war, moves people, and touches on a historical topic that remains contemporary.
Soundtrack release and arena performance
Musician Álvaro Lafuente, known professionally as Guitarricadelafuente, co-stars in the production as Sebastián alongside Milo Quifes as Carlos and Carlos González as Alberto. On 2 October, Lafuente concluded his Spanish Leather album cycle with a performance before a sold-out crowd at Madrid's Movistar Arena. Following the concert, he released the live video performance of La nieve on YouTube, a song included on the film's official soundtrack. The underlying studio album Spanish Leather, released more than one year prior, maintains platinum certification status in Spain.
