German cinemas offer five-euro tickets for nationwide Kinofest weekend

Nationwide five-euro admission initiative

Movie theaters across Germany are offering reduced ticket prices this weekend as part of the nationwide Kinofest campaign. On Saturday and Sunday, participating cinemas will sell tickets for five euros per screening. The initiative is organized by the cinema industry association HDF Kino in partnership with several other film associations and industry partners. Moviegoers can purchase tickets directly at local cinema box offices or through individual theater online booking systems. Organizers have advised customers to purchase their admissions in advance, noting that popular screenings may sell out quickly. During the previous year's campaign, HDF Kino recorded nearly 1.65 million visitors at participating venues across Germany over the promotional weekend.

Film lineup and participating venues

The promotional schedule features current theatrical releases alongside special programmed events and unreleased previews. Current titles scheduled for screenings include the action fantasy production Die Odyssee as well as the drama Vaterland, which stars German actress Sandra Hüller. Participating movie houses are also staging special anniversary screenings of popular older films for audiences. In addition, select cinemas will present previews of upcoming films ahead of their official nationwide theatrical release dates. The campaign includes cinemas across all of Germany, with widespread participation throughout the federal state of Thuringia. Participating Thuringian towns and cities include Erfurt, Weimar, Jena, Bad Salzungen, Altenburg, Nordhausen, Mühlhausen, Ilmenau, Suhl, Sonneberg, Gotha, Eisenach, Saalfeld, and Rudolstadt.

Political support from Thuringia's state premier

Thuringia Minister-President Mario Voigt has renewed his official support for the Kinofest initiative ahead of the weekend. In a video message published for the promotional campaign, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) politician emphasized going to the cinema as a communal family activity. Voigt shared that he had recently visited a movie theater together with his sons. He explained that his sons chose a different film from the one he initially intended to watch, though he enjoyed the experience.

“I actually wanted to see 'Odyssey', but they chose a different film, but that was exciting too.”

The state premier used his address to encourage regional audiences to take advantage of the reduced five-euro admission rates at local theaters.

Regional box office recovery and rising ticket costs

The discount weekend follows an increase in cinema ticket sales across Thuringia during the first half of the year. Statistics published by the German Federal Film Board (FFA) show that approximately 850,000 cinema tickets were sold in Thuringia between January and June. This figure marks an increase compared to the approximately 779,000 tickets sold in the state over the same six-month period of the prior year.

While ticket sales increased, the average price paid per ticket by cinema audiences in Thuringia also rose over the same period. According to the FFA data, the average admission price increased from 9.64 euros in the first half of the previous year to 10.17 euros in the first half of this year.
