In brief
Yonhap, citing an unnamed South Korean government source, reported on Saturday, 24 October 2026 that Kim arrived in Dandong earlier in the day, while KCNA had not mentioned the visit.
The New Yalu River Bridge, completed on the Chinese side in 2014, officially opened on 15 October 2026, linking Dandong with Sinuiju across roughly 3 km with four lanes.
North Korea did not connect the bridge to its road network or open customs facilities while relations with China were cool, and it began building the access infrastructure in 2025.
Xi Jinping visited Pyongyang in June 2026, the first visit since 2019, while the Yakov Novichenko Bridge to Russia opened about a month earlier and Kim has sent as many as 16,000 troops to Ukraine since late 2024.

Unconfirmed arrival
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly arrived in Dandong, the Chinese border city across the Yalu river from North Korea. Yonhap news agency reported the trip on Saturday, 24 October 2026, citing an unnamed South Korean government source, who said Kim came over the New Yalu River Bridge earlier in the day. The report still awaited confirmation from other sources at the time of publication. Pyongyang's state news agency KCNA had not mentioned the visit, and South Korea's unification ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to Bloomberg.
A bridge that sat idle for 12 years
The New Yalu River Bridge connects Dandong with Sinuiju in North Korea and officially opened on 15 October 2026, about a week before the reported crossing. Its four lanes stretch roughly 3 km across the river, and it can handle much more traffic than the older Friendship Bridge between the two countries. China finished its side in 2014, but North Korea did not link the bridge to its road network while relations between the two countries were cool, so it stayed unused for 12 years. North Korea began building the access infrastructure on its side in 2025, and dozens of trucks now cross the bridge. The bridge is expected to ease congestion on the Friendship Bridge nearby.
Ties with Beijing and Moscow
Xi Jinping visited Pyongyang in June 2026, his first trip there since 2019. Kim last visited China in September 2025, when he attended a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of China's victory over Japan in the Second World War, with Russian President Vladimir Putin also present. China remains North Korea's largest trading partner and a key source of diplomatic, economic and political support, although relations have not always been smooth. Russia, a partner but also a regional rival of China, has grown closer to Pyongyang, and since late 2024 Kim has sent ammunition and as many as 16,000 troops to support Putin's war in Ukraine. The Yakov Novichenko Bridge, the first road bridge across the North Korea-Russia border, opened about a month before the Yalu crossing and reportedly made Chinese officials uneasy. Carla Freeman, director of the Foreign Policy Institute at Johns Hopkins SAIS, says China tolerates the Russia ties but watches them closely.
What remains open
Yonhap's unnamed government source is the only confirmation so far. KCNA's silence leaves the trip unverified, and the articles give no purpose or length for the visit. North Korea is thought to be reluctant to increase its economic dependence on China, so the bridge may carry more geopolitical than economic weight for Beijing. Trade with China could bring goods the civilian economy needs, while trade with Russia largely involves military supplies.
