44-year-old arrested for arson after Kefalonia fire burns over 6,000 stremmata
A 44-year-old man with a prior arson conviction was arrested after a fire in Pastra, Kefalonia, burned more than 6,000 stremmata (600 hectares) on Saturday night.
Fire and arrest
On Saturday night, 1 August 2026, at 23:21, a fire broke out in the Pastra area of Kefalonia. Investigators from the Argostoli Fire Service, under the guidance of the Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes, quickly determined the cause was intentional. A 44-year-old Greek national was identified as the suspect, allegedly using an open flame to start the blaze. By the time of his arrest, the fire had burned more than 6,000 stremmata (600 hectares) of land. The man was taken into custody under the flagrante delicto procedure for intentional arson, with a case file opened against him. The immediate mobilisation of fire investigation officers, in cooperation with the Hellenic Police, led to the swift identification of the suspect.

Prior criminal record
The suspect is not a first-time offender. According to the preliminary investigation, he had previously come to the attention of authorities for arson cases and had been convicted and served a prison sentence for similar acts. The Fire Service did not release his name but confirmed his history.

The arrest in Kefalonia is part of a broader crackdown. From 1 January to 2 August 2026, Greek authorities imposed 642 administrative fines totalling €952,026.36 and made 257 arrests for fire-related violations. Of those arrests, 228 (88.72%) were for negligence and 29 (11.28%) for intentional arson. The Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes continues intensive investigations into every suspicious fire, using all available evidence and moving immediately to arrest and refer intentional offenders to justice.

The Hellenic Fire Service issued a stern warning, emphasising that intentional arson is a criminal act of extreme gravity and will be met with zero tolerance.
