Portuguese police arrest 22-year-old student over June guesthouse fire in Gaia
Portuguese police have arrested a 22-year-old student suspected of setting fire to a local accommodation in Vila Nova de Gaia on 12 June, when about 30 guests were inside.
In brief
The Polícia Judiciária detained a 22-year-old student on suspicion of setting fire to a local accommodation in Vila Nova de Gaia on 12 June, outside of flagrante delicto.
Around 30 people were staying in the building when the fire started. Guests spotted the blaze and acted before it caused more serious consequences, and no injuries were reported.
The suspect is due at a first judicial interrogation, where a judge will decide any coercive measures. None had been disclosed when the police statement was issued.
The arrest
The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) detained a 22-year-old student suspected of starting a fire at a local accommodation in Vila Nova de Gaia, in the Porto district. The fire broke out on 12 June. The arrest was made outside of flagrante delicto, meaning the suspect was not caught at the scene, and followed investigative steps taken in the months after the blaze. The PJ's Northern directorate carried out the detention. Police say the man had lived at the accommodation for several months before the fire.
The fire and the guests
About 30 people were staying in the building when the fire started. According to the police, the blaze was set by someone who also lived there. The PJ has not identified any motive, and it has not said where in the building the flames began, what means were used, or how extensive the damage was. Guests noticed the fire and intervened before it could cause more serious consequences. The police statement mentions no injuries, and it does not refer to structural damage or to any need to rehouse the people who were staying there.
The PJ's statement on the case reads:
“The suspect, without any justifying motive, set fire to the local accommodation where he had lived for many months and where about thirty people were staying.”
Investigation and next steps
More than four months passed between the fire and the arrest. Because the detention was made outside of flagrante delicto, investigators had to gather enough material beforehand to link the suspect to the fire. The PJ has not disclosed what evidence was collected or what specific elements support the suspicion. The man is formally named as a suspect for urban arson, a classification adopted at this stage of the process that does not amount to a conviction. He is due to appear before a judge for a first judicial interrogation, where the judge will assess the evidence and decide on any coercive measures. No measures had been disclosed against him at the time of the reporting.
