Three Irish boxers secure European Championship quarter-final spots in Sofia

McConnell advances past Durkacz

Jon McConnell progressed to the medal rounds at the European Elite Boxing Championships in Sofia on Saturday evening. The Belfast southpaw faced Polish boxer Damian Durkacz, a Tokyo Olympian and 2026 World Boxing Cup Brazil champion, in the 70kg last-16 stage. The fighters entered the third round level on points before McConnell claimed a unanimous decision in the final frame to win 4-1. McConnell spoke about sticking to his tactical plan in the closing exchanges.

I stuck to the tactics the coaches had given me. I had a good last minute to the last round. It was a good fight, and fair play to him.

The Commonwealth Games champion advances to meet Italy's Gabriele Guidi Rontani on Monday in the quarter-finals. Guidi Rontani enters the bout as a Mediterranean Games champion and World Boxing Cup China bronze medallist at 75kg. McConnell stated his ambitions for the tournament following the victory.

This is sort of my coming-of-age year, this year. On the back of my Commonwealths, winning Europeans is a step up, so it's two down and three to go. It's gold medal only, that's it.

O'Rourke marks return with unanimous win

In the 80kg division, 2022 world champion Lisa O'Rourke returned to competition following a recurring hand injury that kept her out of the ring for over a year. Making her debut at 80kg, the Castlerea fighter defeated Greece's Vasiliki Stavridou, a European under-23 medallist, by unanimous decision in Ring A. O'Rourke controlled the bout from the opening bell, forcing Stavridou to take two standing counts during the third round. The judges scored the contest 30-26, 30-26, 30-26, 30-26 and 30-25 in the Irish boxer's favour. The Roscommon native reflected on her competitive return after the bout.

It's just over a year since I was in the ring and it's hard work to get back. I'm delighted to be here representing Ireland and to get a win under my belt in my first bout, happy days.

O'Rourke will face Britain's Emily Asquith on Tuesday evening in the quarter-finals. Asquith enters the contest after winning silver at the 2025 World Boxing Championships.

Moorehouse progresses as Sweeney bows out

Daina Moorehouse earned a place in the quarter-finals with a 3-2 split-decision victory over Bulgarian boxer Zlatislava Chukanova in the 51kg division. The 25-year-old Bray native previously defeated Chukanova at the second Olympic qualifier in Bangkok. The judges scored Saturday's bout 29-28, 29-28, 27-30, 28-29 and 29-28 in Moorehouse's favour despite a standing count in the final round. Moorehouse reviewed her tactics and the third-round pressure after the decision was confirmed.

It was a tough fight; she was game today. In the opening round, I think she was trying to counter me rather than putting pressure on, which she'd usually do. Coming to the third, she put the pressure on, and it was getting messy and it was getting a bit tangly. But I was up after the first two, so it's always better when you have that bit of comfort going into the third round, knowing that you're ahead.

Moorehouse now boxes Spain's Laura Fuentes Fernandez, a World and European Games bronze medallist who won their previous meeting at the 2025 World Championships on a 3-2 split. Mayo's Shannon Sweeney was eliminated in the 48kg division following a 4-1 defeat to Italy's Chiara Mosetti in Ring B. Sweeney won the opening round 4-1 but sustained a count in the second round, with judges scoring the bout 28-29, 28-29, 29-28, 28-29 and 27-30. Team Ireland concluded Saturday's card in Sofia with three wins from four bouts.
